2. Introduction • Safety is everyone’s responsibility • In this lesson we will discuss safe work practices • Has anyone here ever been injured on the job? • What could have been done to prevent that injury

3. Agenda • Personal safety • Shop safety • Tool safety • Housekeeping • Fire safety • Vehicles

4. Not too loose, could get caught in machinery No synthetics when working with welding equipment Safety boots or shoes, csa approved Safety gloves, impact, vibrations, sharp or hot objects Latex gloves to protect skin from chemicals Personal safety- Clothing

5. Personal safety-Jewelry, hair • Remove rings and watches , metals are excellent electrical conductors – shocks burns • Long hair- tie it up

6. Personal safety-eyes • Wear safety goggles or a face sheild when working with: • Batteries • Grinding or cutting metal • Exhaust work-rust bits get in the eyes • Working with Freon/ ac repairs

7. Personal safety-eyes • Eye wash station/solution- know where it is in your shop • You only get one set of eyes, look after them

8. Shop safety-horseplay • Jokes, not always so funny • Injury to others or to you • Damage valuable equipment • Responsibility for your actions • Could get you fired

9. Shop safety • Most accidents are caused by failure to observe safety rules • Know your shops safety rules and regulations • If none exist, make up a list • Safety steward • Employer / employee responsibilities • Workers compensation, it costs us all

10. Tool safety-hand tools • Pull ratchets and wrenches, don’t push away from you. • Use both hands to avoid injury • Identify and replace worn and broken sockets, screwdriver tips, worn wrenches and ratchets

11. Tool safety-hand toolschisels • Chisels-should be maintained • Head and point • Worn heads, splinter fragments • 60 degree angle on points • WEAR SAFETY GLASSES

12. Tool safety-hand toolshammers • Check handles for looseness and cracks • Try taping up handle shaft near head to help absorb the shock of misses • Don’t hit them together • Quality of tools, watch the cheep stuff

Tool safety-hand toolsPullers Hydraulic presses • Lubricate puller threads and other moving parts • Use hydraulic presses or portapower units in a safe manner, high pressures can cause injury • Secure the work or cover with heavy rags or sheild • Get training on the equipment • Wear safety glasses

Tool safety-power toolsair • Maintain air lines- broken lines act like a whip • Air ratchet lock up- torque- watch hands • Running air gun for removeing bolts in tight areas can jam hand between gun and vehicle frame/body • Do not use air blower to clean your hands/body • Never spin a wheel bearing with the blower- it can lock up and you could lose your finger

18. Shop Housekeeping • Keep floors clean and dry – no grease, oil or water • Use floor dry that is not clay based if possible – dust is a carcinogen. • Do not use sawdust – fire hazard • Clear pathways for escape (in case of fire) limit clutter

19. Shop Housekeeping • Keep benches clean and anchored to the floor • Maintain vise screw oil and make sure jaws are kept tight • Oily rags should be kept in a fireproof container • Know where the fire extinguishers are and have them serviced as per requirements

20. Vehicle jacking and hoists • Use safety stands – ALWAYS • Know the correct way – or ask how • Maintain equipment, annual hoist inspection is mandatory • If a car starts to fall – let go and run

21. Fire Safety • Question- if you discover a fire? • Where is the closest exit • Where is the fire alarm • Should we call the fire department- yes • Do I know how to operate the fire extinguisher • How fast can I run

22. Working with batteries • Batteries contain sulphuric acid/ protect your skin and eyes • Wear safety glasses • Hydrogen gas is given off when batteries are charged or discharged-hydrogen is explosive

23. Vehicles • Don’t assume brakes and steering are good • Chalk on windows-no brakes, no start, est.. • When driving car- put down the drivers window so you can hear warnings • Turn off the radio • Listen for noises

24. vehicles • Get help with large vehicles • Don’t let customers drive cars into the shop • Never stand in front of or behind a moving vehicle being brought in

25. Carbon monoxide • Poisoning-symptoms • Headaches • Chest tightness • Tiredness • Nausea • Vomiting • Have proper ventilation • Use exhaust extractors all year long
