Emerging Contaminant (EC) Definition • Hazardous materials or mixtures • Pose health threat • No standards exist • Toxicological information is limited or is being re-evaluated • New source or exposure pathway • Contaminants of emerging concern in consumer products • Pose risks to human health and ecological life • ECs may be chemicals, radiological or microbial substances

  3. Project Goals • Identify key criteria • Illustrate examples • Seek comments from states and ECOS on the criteria and utility of the tool

  4. Key Criteria • A multimedia contaminant • Widespread exposure exists • Hazard/toxicity of the contaminant • Sensitive populations • Tangible outcomes possible
