Carey’s TIP Project EDLF- 5450 November 4, 2009 Cool Fonts. Lame Jokes.
TIP Project Placement ( TIPPP ) • Math Engineering Science Academy • MESA = Technology Paradise • 9th Graders… or Child Prodigies?
Logger Pro is— A) someone who cuts wood… professionally. B) like the game Frogger. But with a Log. C) a computer software used in Physics classes that analyzes data from a multitude of sources, builds tables and graphs, and solves equations.
The term “Kinematics”-- A) describes those suffering from an addiction to Kinemat. B) is Yiddish for “Headache”. C) describes the branch of Physics dealing with an object’s motion.
The Standards • PH.1 The student will plan and conduct investigations in which • b) instruments are selected and used to extend observations and measurements of… motion • c) information is recorded and presented in an organized format; • d) metric units are used in all measurements and calculations; • e) the limitations of the experimental apparatus and design are recognized; • h) appropriate technology including computers… is used for gathering and analyzing data and communicating results.
The Standards • PH.4 The student will investigate and understand how applications of physics affect the world. Key concepts include • a) examples from the real world; and • b) exploration of the roles and contributions of science and technology. • PH.5 The student will investigate and understand the interrelationships among mass, distance, force, and time through mathematical and experimental processes. Key concepts include • a) linear motion; • e) gravitation.
The Project • Free-Fall Motion • Videos of students dropping objects • Analysis of Videos using Logger Pro • Compare Experimental Free-Fall to Theoretical Free-Fall • Acceleration, Velocity, Position, Time
Techno-Necessities • Flip Cameras • Computers with Logger Pro • Student Dell Netbooks • Google Docs • Twitter • Poll Everywhere • Screen Capture • Promethean Board
The Mini Unit Lesson 1- “Yeah I’m Free. Free fallin’…” • Presentation on Free-fall motion • Promethean Board • Poll Everywhere Questions • Interactive Simulations and graphing • Individual / Paired Problem Solving • Group Discussion
“Free Fallin” was written by-- A) John Mayer. Obvi. B) The Jonas Brothers. C) Tom Petty? Who’s Tom Petty? Are you like 100 years old or something?
The Mini Unit Lesson 2: Getting to Know Logger Pro • Logger Pro Demo on Video Analysis • Screencast • Directions with Screen Captures
The Mini Unit Lesson 3: Theoretical Free-Fall Models • Tutorial by Steve • Google Doc Spreadsheet • Equations • Graphs
The Mini Unit Lesson 4: Free-Fall Lab & Write-Up -Groups of 4 -Video of Dropping Objects out of MESA window -Analysis of Videos using Logger Pro to find acceleration, velocity, position, time
What type of video format does Logger Pro prefer? A) .avi B) .mov C) Logger Pro is temperamental and can enter “I Don’t Like This Video Format So Now I Will Freak Out For No Reason” Mode at any given moment.
Logger Pro Freak Out Mode • Videos do not load • Students’ creative trouble-shooting techniques = Fail. • Second Time Around= Success. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Seriously.
Assessments • Poll Everywhere • Google Docs- Theoretical Model • Google Docs- Lab Discussion Questions
Left To-Do List • MESA Follow Up • Assessing the Assessments • Use of Technology since Lesson • Logger Pro • Applicability to other Content Areas • VAST Conference
Project Report Card Area of Project Grade Comments Incredible Software, but Excessive Mood Swings A- Logger Pro Decrease Group Sizes in future (2-3) to prevent crowding B+ Group Sizes Can Logger Pro be used in classes other than Physics? Applicability Across Content Areas B- A+ Student Engagement Excellent!
Techno-Success • Student Engagement through Creation • Understand content through application • Real World Examples • Facilitated Discussion about Difficult Concepts
What did Carey learn during this project? A) Troubleshooting is more than just having the ITC Help Desk on speed dial. B) Students construct knowledge of difficult concepts through hands-on application. C) Teaching with Technology can engage different types of learners. D) Physics is hard. E) All of the Above.
