  1. Group Work Jobs, Norms, and expectations for communicating and collaborating effectively

  2. Group Work • We are going to begin working in groups in order to critically analyze texts on a deeper level. • We will be working in groups of FOUR to accomplish our goal of critically analyzing these texts. • Poetry • Literature (Fiction and Non-Fiction) • Have some fun!

  3. Group Roles breakdown

  4. Discussion Director • Creates questions to increase comprehension (all types of questioning) • Asks: who, what, why, when, where, how, and what if? • Relates questioning to the Depth and Complexity Icons (ex: Did anyone else notice a reoccurring pattern with regards to Mischa’s stealing?)

  5. Vocabulary Enricher • Clarifies word meanings and pronunciations • Uses research resources (computer, dictionary, thesaurus) • Clarifies historical information and context (ex: Himmler was Hitler’s right hand man who was in charge of some of the ghettos).

  6. Literary Luminary • Guides oral reading for a purpose (reading passages out loud) • Points group members to important or key passages • Examines figurative language, parts of speech, and vivid descriptions

  7. Checker • Checks for completion of assignments • Helps monitor discussion for equal participation from all members • The only person who is allowed to ask the teacher a question (meaning, all group members must agree to ask this question because no one member knows the answer). • In charge of coordinating sharing and presentations. • In charge of filling in absent group members.

  8. Group Member Qualities What makes for a great collaborator?

  9. A SKILLFUL Group Member • Fulfills their group role & stays on task • Explains ideas • Puts ideas together • Requests or provides information • Asks if everyone is ready to decide what to do

  10. An ESPECIALLY SKILLFUL Group Member • Asks quiet group members what they think • Listens with interest to what other people say • Praises good ideas and suggestions • Is willing to compromise • Is concerned with understanding the problem, not just getting the answer • Challenges others in a respectful way when there is disagreement

  11. A DESTRUCTIVE Group Member • Talks too much • Listens very little • Insists on having his or her ideas accepted • Fails to do something about the destructive behavior of others • Criticizes people rather than their ideas • Lets other people do all the work • Is impatient or sarcastic with questions that may seem too obvious

  12. Group Norms What is expected of you?

  13. Getting Work Done • Pull your own weight—everyone participates equally. • Focus & stay on task. • Everybody does the work together, but each person writes it in their own notebook. • No one’s done until everyone’s done. • Do your HW so that you are prepared to discuss with your group.

  14. Being a Part of the Group • Have one of the group roles make sure that the group norms are being followed. • Fulfill the duties of your role in the group. • Everybody cleans up. • Keep the desks clear of extraneous stuff to make it easier to see and focus while working!
