  1. Precision Technology and Ken Brennan Ames, IA December 14, 2009

  2. Overview • Agricultural Background • Educational Background • Precision Agriculture on our Farm • Internship Experience • Future Plans for myself and my Career

  3. Agricultural Background • Grew up in NW Iowa (Emmetsburg) • Farm about 800 acres of corn – soybean rotation • Winter wheat – soybean rotation is used on 90 acres by Graettinger • Two older brothers left for college when I was in high school • Meant a lot of seat time through my high school days

  4. Educational Background • Graduated from Graettinger High School (now Graettinger – Terril High School) in 2003. • Enrolled in Iowa State as an Agricultural Engineer in spring semester of 2004. • Deployment forced me to drop-out and I decided to pursue a Agricultural Systems Technology degree in the fall semester of 2005.

  5. Precision Technology on our Farm Soil Sampling for VRA of lime and fertilizer NH TR 96 with an AG – Leader Yield Monitor EZ – Guide 250 that moves from the combine to the sprayer. EZ – Guide 500 on NH 8970

  6. Internship Experience • AGCO Corporation in Hesston, KS during the Summer ‘09. • Part of the Advanced Technology Systems (ATS) product engineering group. • Two projects: • Auto-Guide 2 • AGCOMMAND (telemetry)

  7. Auto – Guide 2 • Newly developed integrated auto-steer guidance system for AGCO vehicles. • Partnership with TSD, or Topcon – Sauer Danfoss, for electronic-hydraulic steering components and antenna-receiver universal top dock that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle. • Addition of new virtual terminal developed by ATS has to work with Topcon guidance software. • Two different software programs developed by two different companies that must work together on a variety of different vehicles.

  8. Auto-Guide 2 and AGCO DT275B

  9. MF8680 with Auto-Guide 2 C1000 Terminal on a MT765C

  10. AGCO – Telemetry • Telemetry- Remote measurement and reporting of information. • Relatively new concept for agricultural use, but has been widely used for commercial vehicles such as delivery trucks and semis. • Simple concept of using information from the vehicle, sent through the cell phone data network to a server, and viewed on a website at the back office. • Able to see real-time location, speed, yield, etc. and make efficiency reports for every piece of equipment. • Equipment can be in stopped, idle, transport, working, or headland turning modes. • Lot of work with people from Germany and Italy

  11. Telemetry Components

  12. Field Report of Combine in Germany

  13. Future Plans • Graduate in May 2010 • The job search has lead me to Ziegler and Case. • Both positions would be field service and support. • Better idea next few months on that situation. • If a career in the machinery industry doesn’t work, farming is a viable option.
