Lighting • Lighting is a form of energy • About 25% of home’s electrical use • Lighting can affect the way you feel, work, and interact with others. • Increasing light efficiency can lower energy bills • Needed in the dark • Thomas Edison invented the incandescent light bulb
Goals • Ability to see in the dark • Save energy • Reducing the pressure to build new power plants and generating less waste for landfills • Cutting down the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming
Fact “If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a ENERGY STAR – qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars”
Obstacles • They burn out • Incandescent light bulbs produce greenhouse gases • Some are expensive • People not realizing the benefits of switching
Political/Economic issues • Expensive • Uses a lot of energy • Contains mercury
Incandescent Lighting • most common in homes • Thomas Edison invention • traditionally delivered about 85% of household illumination http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/light-bulb-label.jpg
Incandescent Lighting Cont. • Inexpensive and easy to find • The light is warm emitting most of the light from the yellow to the red end of the spectrum • Available in many varieties
Compact Fluorescent • Combines energy efficiency of fluorescent lighting w/ incandescent fixtures • Consist of 2 parts: a gas- filled tube, magnetic/ electronic ballast http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx?q=compact+lighting&go=Search+Images&form=QB#focal=f87bd34191a482b168b6a8b6f1a6d34c&furl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.preciosa.com%2FNR%2Frdonlyres%2F80F3034E-6FE7-456E-B0B3-9156D3FFB056%2F0%2Fcompact_lamp.jpg
Compact Fluorescent Light (CFLS) • use up to 75% less energy than incandescent lights • Last ten times longer than a regular incandescent light bulb. • More expensive than incandescent lights http://keetsa.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/cfl.jpg
LED • Electricity Visible light • Last longer • Entertaining • Easily dimmed • Silent operation • Available in many colors • Low-voltage power supply • Lack of availability for white LEDs http://www.vorne.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Seven_segment_display-animated.gif

Quality of Lighting Light Emitted Light Longevity Light Prices Light Wattage Light Brightness
Flood Lighting • Provide large amounts of light with minimal energy usage • Convenient and efficient http://www.cooperlighting.com/specfiles/pdf/Streetworks/GPF.pdf http://news.thomasnet.com/images/large/532/532176.jpg
Natural Lighting • paint light colored walls to maximize use of natural light to cut the electricity use • All lives because of natural lighting
Sky Lights • Enhances natural lighting • Cuts down on electricity usage • Very nice looking and brightens the room up http://www.fakro.ca/img/certy_usa/FX_zespolenie400x408.jpg
Light Tubes • Used to distribute lighting throughout buildings • aka Solar pipes, daylight pipes, or solar light pipes http://www.ambience-lighting.com.au/borderlight/bordertubesclear.jpg
Fiber Optics • Used in communication, permits transmission over longer distances, at higher data rates than other forms • Used instead of metal • Used as sensors www.sercos.com/technology/fiber_optics.htm
Indoor/Outdoor Lighting • Indoor Lighting • Used in bathrooms, halls, bedrooms, and other often used rooms • Use light colored walls to maximize natural lighting 64.9.80.131/consumer/onlinecatalogs.html • Outdoor Lighting • Aesthetics- illuminate exterior • Security- illuminate house grounds • Utility- illuminate porch/ driveway area for navigation www.directoutdoorliving.com/lighting.aspx
Outdoor Solar Lighting • Provides free electricity • Uses solar cells to convert sunlight to electricity which is stored during the night • Must receive sunlight to work www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Lilies-Three-pi...
