Practices • Begin enough in advance to allow students to learn material • Schedule before or after school • Students who really want to participate • Doesn’t waste class time • Set normal schedule for practices
Practices • Closer to competition: • Set up practice event or • Attend practice event hosted by someone else
Determining Final Team • Practice contest • Past performance • Effort /Attendance • Seniority??
At the Competition • Before event begins • Register . • Pep talk. • Remind them of key points. • Relax them. • During event • If possible, walk through event area to learn. • Talk with other ag teachers who have teams. • After event • Teachable moments – review event • Walk team through • Get event organizers or experienced teachers to talk with team
Long Term Success • Recruit young students and build each year by continually recruitingyoung students toreplace seniors. Use veteran students to help teach young students.
Celebrate • Celebrate all successes, no matter how small. • School announcements. • Local newspaper. • FFA banquet. • School board. • Etc.
New Ag Teachers • No one expects you to win everything • Participate and learn • Don’t be afraid to ask questions
