  1. El Pasado simple en Español El Imperfecto vs. El Pretérito

  2. Every Action Has • A beginning • A middle • An end

  3. El Pretérito y El ImperfectoAre two simple ways in Spanishto express these different actions in the past.

  4. En otras palabras….. When the focus is on the beginning and/or the end, use the preterit. Por ejemplo I put on my shoes and got up.

  5. En Español, por favor….. Me puse los zapatos y me levanté.

  6. Otro ejemplo…

  7. También Use the preterit to express a series of completed actions. During the game, the players ran, jumped and shouted.

  8. It’s over folks….. Use the preterit to express an action that is viewed as completed.

  10. Usos del imperfecto To talk about the way “things used to be” Cómo en los “good old days”? Sí, señor

  12. El Imperfecto • To explain habitual actions in the past. • To speak of an ongoing action in the past. • To say in Spanish: I used to do……. I was doing…..

Mary was crying when her mother arrived. María lloraba es el imperfecto.

  14. El imperfecto Likes to give details : Such as Time Weather Mood Age Physical and Mental Characteristics

  15. I spoke You arrived The dog barked She left He called We lied He asked He cried El PretéritoLikes to be simple

  16. El imperfecto Likes to draw things out. Likes to set the stage… Likes to explain WHY…. Likes to present the conditions…….

  17. El PretéritoExpresses • An action that happened while something else was already going on. • I was reading when Mary arrived.

  18. Yo estaba leyendo cuando María llamó. El Pretérito = María llamó.

  19. Ejemplo del Pretérito We were talking when Raul called This is the Preterit.

  20. El Pretérito They were dancing when Jose’smother called.

  21. ¿Y el imperfecto? I was reading when…….. We were talking when…… They were dancing when…… ¿El imperfecto? Sí, señor, el imperfecto.
