  2. Symbols of America Communities Have History Second Grade

  3. Uncle Sam • Sam Wilson lived in Massachusetts. • He was a tall, bearded man who wore striped pants and a tall hat covered with stars and stripes. • During the War of 1812 he gave barrels of meat to our army.

  4. The Bald Eagle • The eagle is a symbolof power, chosen after the Revolutionary War. • It is a great and powerful bird, just as our newnation was great and powerful. • In 1782 the eagle was chosen as our national bird.

  5. The United States Flag • Our flag stands for many things. The seven red and six white stripes stand for the original thirteen colonies. The 50 stars stand for 50 states. • Red stands for valor, white stands for goodness and blue stands for justice.

  6. Declaration of Independence • Thomas Jefferson drafted the document between June 11 and June 28, 1776. • Its final draft was dated July 4, 1776. • The declaration explained why the 13 colonies were breaking ties with England.

  7. The Liberty Bell • The Liberty Bell rang out on July 8, 1776 to announce the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. • It is a symbol of freedom. • It cracked two times- once in 1752 and again in 1835.

  8. The Statue of Liberty • The statue was a gift from France. • It is a symbol of freedom and of friendship between France and the United States • SculptorFrederick Auguste Bartholdi made the statue.

Glossary • Breaking Ties - To no longer be friends. • Colonies – A group of people who go live in a new land but remain loyal to the country they came from. • Document – An official paper. • Final Draft – The copy of a paper that is ready to be published. • Freedom – The right to be free. • Friendship – Being friends with someone else. • Goodness – Being good.

Treating everyone the same way. • Massachusetts – One of fifty states that is part of the United States of America. • Nation – A group of people who live in the same land and share the same government. • Revolutionary War – The war fought between the colonies and England for the rights of the people living in the colonies. It created the United States of America. It began in 1775 and ended in 1781.

  20. Glossary • Sculptor – An artist who makes 3D representations out of solid substance. This could be clay, metal, wood or stone. • Statue – A representation of an animal or person that is made out of clay, metal, wood, or stone by an artist. • Symbol – A picture that represents something else.

  21. Glossary • Valor – Being brave at a very difficult time. • War of 1812 – This war was fought between the United States and England. It lasted from 1812 until 1815.
