Benefits of Bio-char from an Environmental impact perspective Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, once said: “If we want to tackle climate change challenges, we must look to the untapped potential of the soil to sequester carbon. By doing that, we are improving biodiversity of the soil ecosystem and improving the productivity of the soil, therefore impacting the livelihoods of affected populations.” This committee was put together by the United Nations to address the many environmental problems that have plagued our planet since the Industrial Age. One of the major challenges that environmentalists have spoken based upon years of research, ‘Global Warming’. It is hard to fathom the immense impact that Global Warming can have on the future of our planet, and for our species in general. Bio-char is a sustainable and an extremely powerful tool to combat some of most urgent environmental problems of our time. Global Warming Bio-char has been an extensively used product for thousands of years, first discovered by the Amazonian aboriginal people as a solution to soil infertility. After substantial studies, researchers came up with various fields where bio-char could be implemented, to boost productivity. Bio-char can be utilized to help combat climate change by trapping carbon in soil, and also by displacing fossil fuel use. Bio-char can be retained by the soil for hundreds of years, which means agriculturists have to invest in bio-char a few times only. Additionally, because bio-char retains nitrogen, emissions of Nitrous Oxide which is one of the most potent green-house gases can be reduced. Bio-char is manufactured from waste accumulated from animal farmlands, and thus also leads to the reduction of methane generated from the natural decomposition of farm waste. Soil Degradation and tackling infertile land Bio-char has been known to boost the productivity of soil. Agriculturists use bio-char for its properties to convert infertile soil to extremely fertile ones. It enables food security, which is a major concern for almost half of our population. Use of bio-char has also caused a cutback on the amount of chemicals and fertilizers needed to boost soil efficiency. Soil is also less likely to degrade over-time due to widespread agriculture around the year, because of bio-char’s retention property.
Property to reverse water-pollution Farmers and agriculturists have observed a considerably lower amount of irrigation water usage after including bio-char as a tool for plantations. This is due to bio-char’s water retention property in soil. It also helps to preserve essential nutrients and agro- chemicals in soil for use of plants and crops Waste Management A large amount of waste is produced from animals and humans as well all over the world. Manufacture of bio-char serves as a simple yet scalable method of controlling the massive amount of waste being produced. Producing bio-char is also a carbon negative process, which is a beneficial technique to counter environmental degradation. Combining these usages, with bio-energy production is also proving to be a successful approach. Discouraging cutting down trees Tree wood is one of the most widely used sources of manufacture and energy for man. Implementing use of biochar, to produce green-energy is a formidable strategy to counter de-forestation. Companies looking to promote use of bio-char Ag-Bio-Char, a company based out of California manufactures a special grade of bio-char exclusively for use in farm-lands. They also produce AG-Greene Feed specifically for use as feed for the animal farming industry. Some other forms of bio-char are produced as a by-product of bio-fuel, and can be harmful if used on plants or animals. The company and their leader, has taken a strong step towards promoting bio-char use for environmental causes as well by educating their customers about the valuable properties that bio-char possesses.
