Winterizing an above ground pool will ensure that the water stays cleanand healthy and the equipment is functioning well. • It will also reduce the time and cost of reopening it.
Test Water Chemistry • Test the water for pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and chlorine. • Balance the water to protect the pool from corrosion or scale build-up. • The water levels should be: pH: 7.2 – 7.8 Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm Calcium Hardness: 175 - 250 ppm Chlorine: 2- 3 ppm
Clean the Pool Clean the pool before winterizing it. Vacuum and brush the sides and floor. To prevent oil and scum lines in the tile, clean it thoroughly.
Clean the Filter, Skimmer and Pump Basket • All unused chlorine products should be removed from the chlorinator. • Spray the cartridge filter elements and D.E. grids with cleaner and rinse them with a garden hose. Backwash the sand filters.
Add a Winter Chemical Kit • An ideal winter chemical kit contains chlorine or non-chlorine shock, and a wintertime algaecide. • Adding a winter chemical kit will keep the water free from algae.
Lower the water level • Do not completely drain the pool. • Hydrostatic pressure can cause damage. • Lower the water level below the skimmer and returns. • Hydrostatic pressure can cause damage. • Blow water out by forcing air down the skimmer and through the plumbing
Remove Pool Accessories • Remove all accessories from your pool, such as ladders and floats. Properly clean, dry and store them for winter. • Remove all drain plugs from pump, filter tank and any other pool equipment.
Put an Air Pillow • Cover your pool with either a winter pool cover or a safety cover. • Place the cover over the pool surface with the black side down, and secure it with the cable and winch under the top ledge of the pool.
