MOON PHASES LUNAR PHASES
New Moon New moon phase occurs when it comes between the sun and the earth. We are unable to see the illuminated portion of the moon from earth
Waxing Crescent Waxing means increasing and thus, when the moon starts appearing in a crescent shape, it is waxing crescent phase
First Quarter The 1st quarter moon is a primary phase after the new moon. We can see only half of the surface of the moon in illuminated form
Waxing Gibbous This phase occurs when the moon is about to become fully illuminated but it is less than the full circle. At the same time, it is larger than the semi-circle shape. The shape is larger than the third quarter
Full Moon The full moon is the lunar phase when we are able to see the moon completely illuminated. This shows the brightest moon to the people on earth. The shadowed portion is hidden and the sunlit part is facing us
Waning Gibbous Waning gibbous starts when the moon begins getting slimmer. The shape during this phase is less than the full moon. But it is larger than the semi-circle shape or the third quarter
Last Quarter The last quarter generally occurs after a week from the full moon day. In this lunar phase, the moon is seen only in half shape. It is in a semi-circle shape.
Waning Crescent Waning crescent is the last stage of the lunar cycle and occurs just before the new moon. During the phase, the illumination remains just in a thin crescent shape. After this phase, the moon completely disappears for the earth and the new moon starts
The phases are repeated every 28 or 28.5 days which is called lunar cycle or moon cycle
