Global Burden of Disease, Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2010 -Preliminary Result Estimates-

This study provides preliminary estimates of the global burden of visual impairment and blindness, showing a decrease in prevalence over the past 20 years. However, population growth has led to an increase in the number of people affected. The study also explores regional and temporal trends, as well as country-specific information.

  5. Preliminary GBD Expert Group Estimates of Global Number of Persons in 2010 withBlind and Visual Impairment: 33.5 million Blind 199 million MSVI (29.6-38.1) (177-231)

  6. Trends • The prevalence of blindness and MSVI has decreased in the last 20 years, despite the relative increase in older adults in the world population • However, due to population growth, the estimates suggest that absolute blind population has been stable and the population with MSVI has increased.

  15. Summary Statistics • Prelim. estimates 33.5 million people Blind in 2010 (29.6,38.1), 60.6% of Blind were female • 199 million (177,231) had Moderate and Severe Visual Impairment in 2010, 56.8% female • The highest age-standardized prevalence of blindness in those ≥ 50 years was in Western Sub-Saharan Africa at 5.8% • The highest age-standardized prevalence of MSVI in those ≥ 50 years was in South Asia at 24.1%

  16. Summary Trends • The global age-standardized prevalence of blindness for adults aged 50+ years decreased from 3.1% (2.7%-3.6%) worldwide in 1990 to 2.0% (1.8%-2.3%) in 2010. • The global age-standardized prevalence of MSVI for adults aged 50+ years decreased from 14.2% (11.2%-16.1%) worldwide in 1990 to 10.8% (9.7%-12.4%) in 2010.
