This study provides preliminary estimates of the global burden of visual impairment and blindness, showing a decrease in prevalence over the past 20 years. However, population growth has led to an increase in the number of people affected. The study also explores regional and temporal trends, as well as country-specific information.

Preliminary GBD Expert Group Estimates of Global Number of Persons in 2010 withBlind and Visual Impairment: 33.5 million Blind 199 million MSVI (29.6-38.1) (177-231)
Trends • The prevalence of blindness and MSVI has decreased in the last 20 years, despite the relative increase in older adults in the world population • However, due to population growth, the estimates suggest that absolute blind population has been stable and the population with MSVI has increased.
