Cambridge Chimes Welcome and Announcements Greeting Each Other Ringing of the Bell
Prelude “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord” ~Knecht Lighting of the candles
*CALL TO WORSHIP L: Sisters and Brothers, have you seen it, felt it? God is sending Hope to us. P: Well, right now we see hectic lives, crowded stores, darkness and fear in many places.
L: Look again, Sisters and Brothers! The spirit of God is coming, moving, bringing Hope. P: We want to place our hope in God, but we are tired and anxious.
L: Well, a long time ago, people were tired and anxious. God came to them and gave them hope. P: May God bring that hope for us today and renew our spirits with Hope!
LIGHTING OF THE HOPE CANDLE L: The prophet Jeremiah shared God’s hope- filled promise with God’s people: P: Jeremiah said, “the days are surely coming…” when God will rescue us.
L: Today we begin our Advent journey, sisters and brothers, when we light candles to mark our path to God’s chosen One, Jesus. P: We begin by lighting the candle of Hope,
for we know that hope in Jesus will light our lives and help us carry God’s love. L: Even though the world can seem dark and cold, we know that the hope of God is coming!
P: Together, we proclaim to each other and the world that, in Jesus, we have hope. L: Let that hope strengthen us each day, each moment;
P: Let that hope guide us into the world as we bear God’s love with our hands and voices.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) It is easy for us, Lord, to let anger,frustration, and anxietyovershadow our lives. We can’t seem to escape them and their painful effects!
We try to find waysto cover them up,but they remain.And in our anxiety,we act out our fear in wayswhich are not helpful, and often go against the ways you have taught us.
We feel pressure togive, and thenresentment in giving.We feel the pressureto be present at every event, and then want to run and hide. Help us, Lord.
Heal our confusedand wounded spirits.Free us again toembrace your Hope.Let us see the many ways in which you are present to us… guiding, healing, loving, encouraging.
Forgive us for ourfears, and our frustration. Bring us again to yourlight-filled hope.
* ASSURANCE OF PARDON • L: “The days are coming,” says the prophet Jeremiah, “when all God’s promises will be fulfilled.” These promises of hope, peace, joy, and love are for you. Receive the hope that God offers to you today through forgiveness.
CHOIR ANTHEM “The Wonder of His Grace” ~Rush
PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 21:25-36
There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the
powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see “the Son of Man coming in a cloud” with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Then he told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things take place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day
does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who lie on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’
SCRIPTURE READING: Jeremiah 33:1-3,14-16
The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still confined in the court of the guard: Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it – the Lord is his name: Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and
hidden things that you have not known. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David;
and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
L: This is the word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!
