Dimension 4 • Using Knowledge Meaningfully
Using Knowledge Meaningfully • Decision Making • Investigation • Experimental Inquiry • Problem-solving • Invention • Systems Analysis
Decision-Making How should I invest my discretionary income? Alternatives Criteria • Determine criteria • Determine alternatives • Rank criteria • Rank alternatives • Multiply rankings • Total scores
Investigation • Why do quarters and dimes have ridges and pennies and nickels don’t ? (historical) • How does counterfeiting create problems for society ? (definitional) • What would happen if all the nations of the world shared a common currency? (projective)
Experimental Inquiry I noticed that I couldn’t toss a dollar bill to a friend just a few feet away. The bill just slowly floated down to the ground. What do I notice? How can I explain it? What if...? How can I test it? What happened: Not what I predicted Just what I predicted
Problem Solving You are going to construct a paper airplane with your dollar bill. You can make exactly 4 folds - no more, no fewer. Your airplane should be able to fly the length of this room.
Invention • Invent a dollar bill that would be impossible to counterfeit . • Describe or sketch your dollar.
Systems Analysis • What are the parts of the system? • Describe the boundaries of the system? • Describe how parts affect each other? • Identify various parts of the system and for each explain what would happen if this part changed or stopped working. Analyze your system for budgeting your income.
Designing a Performance Task • Choose one of the strategies for using knowledge meaningfully. With a partner , design a performance task to use in your classes. • Present it to the group. Performance Task
