  11. Open Discussion – Q&A • Certifications: • http://mylearn1.vmware.com/portals/certification/ • How to become a VMware Certified Professional on vSphere 4 (VCP4) • There are four possible paths to achieve VCP4 If you are NEW to VMware • Attend the VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage, the VMware vSphere: Fast Track OR the VMware vSphere: Troubleshooting course. • Take and pass the VCP4 exam • If you are currently a VCP3 • VCP3s must attend the VMware vSphere 4: What’s New [V4] two day instructor-led class in order to upgrade. • Take and Pass the VCP4 exam. • If you are currently a VCP2 • VCP2s who have not upgraded are required to attend the VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage; VMware vSphere: Fast Track OR VMware vSphere: Troubleshooting course • Take and pass the VCP4 exam. • If you are not a VCP3, but have attended one of the prerequisite classes (VI3: Install & Configure; VI3: Deploy Secure & Analyze; or VI3: Fast Track). • Attend the VMware vSphere4: What’s New two day instructor-led course. • Take and pass the VCP4 Exam.

  12. Open Discussion – Q&A How to disable and re-enable hibernation on a computer that is running Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730 The Hiberfil.sys hidden system file is located in the root folder of the drive where the operating system is installed. The Windows Kernel Power Manager reserves this file when you install Microsoft Windows. The size of this file is approximately equal to the amount of random access memory (RAM) that is installed on the computer. The computer uses the Hiberfil.sys file to store a copy of the system memory on the hard disk when the hybrid sleep setting is turned on. If this file is not present, the computer cannot hibernate.Hibernation is made unavailable when you set the value of the Hibernate after setting to Never by using the Power Options item in Control Panel. To make hibernation unavailable, follow these steps: Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue. At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press ENTER. Type exit, and then press ENTER. 13. Open Discussion – Q&A Q: Can anyone share their experiences with running a P2V migration with Converter or other 3rd party tools? I'm looking for any issues that came up or any scripts you use to cleanup the guest OS after the P2V. How did you make sure unused hardware drivers are removed, manual/scripts/tool?Q: What is a standard build for your host systems? CPUs/Cores, Memory, NICs, HBAs, ESX or ESXi, Ent/EntPlus/other, anything I missed Q: What is the standard builds that people have for their templates: C: and D: drives? Q: What are the standard sizes of LUNS everyone uses? Q: Any special tweaks that people have found to make VMware/VDI work better?

  14. Open Discussion – Q&A • Windows 2008-64Bit running SQL 2005-64bit • C: 50GB - system • D: 50GB - SQL • E: CD • F: 30GB – Logs • G: 50GB – Update MGR Store • Create two separate databases. VCenterDB and UpdateDB • Created a 32bit DSN for vCenterDB and UpdateDB. • NOTE: • The default install location on 64-bit operating systems is C:\VMware. • Run the 32-bit ODBC Administrator application, located at [WindowsDir]\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. • Use the application to create your DSN. • You now have a DSN that is compatible with vCenter Server. When the vCenter Server installer prompts you for a DSN, select the 32-bit DSN. • Disabled WWW service. VCenter uses tomcat and communicates on port 80 • Installed VCenter on default drive C: because it uses application data for necessary files. • Set the SQL Server install to use TCP/IP and named pipes. • Run the server under system account. • Update Manager is connected to SQL Database UpdateDB • Patches are downloaded and saved to G:\updatemanager • Created an alias to connected to ***VC***01 – VirtualCenter or Vcenter • ESX Install - How to install ESX 4.pdf

  15. Open Discussion – Q&A Upgrading VMTools / Hardware Tools to 4.0 gotcha’s ***Hidden Network Adapter It creates a new network adapter for the guests and hides the old one. You will now have a hidden network adapter with the same IP address. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269155. Select Start> Run. Enter cmd.exe and press Enter. At the command prompt, run this command: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 Enter Start DEVMGMT.MSC and press Enter to start Device Manager. Select View > Show Hidden Devices. Expand the Network Adapters tree (select the plus sign next to the Network adapters entry). Right-click the dimmed network adapter, and then select Uninstall. ***WINS missing after upgrading Hardware Tools to 4.0.

  16. Open Discussion – Q&A • VM blue screening after updating VMWare tools • Troubleshooting procedures/fix • W2K systems blue screened after tools upgrade. Message mentioned that system was unable to find system drive. • Booting with last known good or in safe mode was unsuccessful. • Connect drive to an existing vm to investigate • Looked for files that had been updated at the time of crash • Started with the setupapi.log file in winnt\temp • Found entries mentioning the install of vm device drivers into winnt\system32\drivers folder • Compared the version of vmscsi.sys to other versions. My guess was that it needed to go back to the version of the same OS and same stage of VMware tools. In this case, it was 2000 and out of date VMware tools. • Logged into a computer that met the criteria. Versions did not match. • Unable to copy the file because the file was in use (makes sense) • **NOTE** A copy of the VMware drivers is stored in c:\program files\vmware\vmware tools\drivers\ • Copied the vmscsi.sys file and used it to replace the one on the machine that was blue screening. (winnt\system32\drivers) • Removed drive from VM & powered on vm that was blue screening. • Great Success! Big sigh of relief • Reinstalled VMtools and updated virtual hardware.

  17. Open Discussion – Q&A Q: I get Error 1316. A Network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\windows\installer\vmware *** A: Run setup with /c. example setup.exe /c W2K8 servers need to have auto play turned on to automatically upgrade VMTools via update manager. Hardware upgrade on Windows 2008. Check you IP settings again. It seems to change this after the hardware upgrade is performed and you reboot the server. I do have a problem with Windows 2000 and 2008 cloning now. Windows 2000 won’t clone – Error: “cannot complete customization” Windows 2008: Problems adding to the domain. Make sure you copy the sysprep files to the server.

  18. Open Discussion – Q&A Q: Do I need a SysLog server if I install 4i? A: Yes, 2i has log files in memory, so if the server reboots the logs are erased. In order to get logs from a corrupted server, you will need to install a SysLog Server and point the log files to it. Q: Do you need any special licenses to add the Nexus 1000 stuff? A: No additional licenses needed for the Nexus 1000 switch Q: Can I migrate / svmotion a thin provisioned guest? A: Yes Q: Can I migrate / svmotion a guest with a RAW disk attached? A: Yes  Q: How to upgrade to latest agents on HP. A: Use 800a to uninstall, then upgrade to latest. The service console VMDK requires at least 8.4GB of available space. VMware recommends that you select a datastore that is local to the ESX host. The service console must be installed on a VMFS datastore that is resident on a host's local disk or on a SAN disk that is masked and zoned to that particular host only. The datastore cannot be shared between Hosts. NFS and software iSCSI datastores are not supported as the destination for the ESX 4.0 service console VMDK.

  19. Open Discussion – Q&A Performance Enhancements – VShpere is Alua aware – “Asymmetric logical unit access” Check with your storage provider to find out if they are “alua” aware. This helps with fail-over and better performance. EMC ?? HP – EVA 8000 NetApp

  21. Open Discussion – Q&A Disk Alignment Problems NetApp – Free tool Vizioncore – Pay per processor We use NFS on a NetApp 3040 for our datastores. They are 1.5TB in size and have de-duplication enabled. We have around 200 VMs per datastore. We were seeing performance problems on VMs as well as build performance issues with hosts that stored their data on the same NetApp. We opened a case with NetApp and the performed an analysis of the performance issue. They were seeing a lot of misaligned I/O which was traced back to the VMDKs. The tool works pretty well, but there are some limitations. It will not work with VMs that have snapshots. All snapshots will need to be deleted before aligning the VMDK. It does not work with VMDKs that have Windows Dynamic partitions. It works with Linux and Solaris 10 VMs, but after realignment, you have to boot the VM off a rescue CD and reinstall the grub boot manager.
