  2. Biographical Info Born 1915 – Died 2005 Height of his career in 1950s and 1960s NOT a puritan (lived 300 years after Bradstreet and Edwards) Was, at one time, married to Marilyn Monroe (so, definitely not a Puritan ) Also wrote: Death of a Salesman, All My Sons

Wrote The Crucible in 1953as a response to the “red scare” • Red Scare = Anti-Communist Sentiment • Headed by Jospeh McCarthy (senator from Appleton, WI) who persecuted / accused people of supporting communism with little or no evidence (Arthur Miller among these) • A metaphorical “Witch Hunt” – a parallel that Miller was trying to make with a real one.

  4. Why are we reading a piece of literature written in 1953 when we’re studying the Puritans? • Miller did a great deal of research into this time period • The play revolves around the Salem Witch Trials – based on actual events and people. • Gives insight into Puritan mindset.

  5. Definitions of CRUCIBLE (know these!) 1: a vessel used for melting a substance that requires a high degree of heat 2: a severe test 3: a place or situation in which powerful political, intellectual, economic or social forces come together and interact to cause or influence change.
