AMO • Limiting Issues • Group is too small. • We need junior faculty. • There is a negotiation for a senior theorist (target of opportunity). • Need to establish the Joint Quantum Institute with NIST. • Encourages Phillips’ involvement • Encourages interaction with Condensed Matter • NIST researchers can be a great LOCAL resource • Space for growth will be problematic. • Already lab and offices are in different buildings. • Need significant presence to compete for quality students. Encouraging AMO at UMD • Started Graduate AMO course 2004 • Hope to offer biannually (more frequent than normal) • NIST staff will teach in Fall 2005 • Gave undergraduate AMO special topics course • Started AMO Seminar • Run occasional joint QCI/AMO seminars • Submitted NSF-CCLI proposal to revamp junior optics lab (PHYS375) Theme Group 1
