  1. Article 10 BALANCE BEAM

  2. 10.1 General • The evaluation of the exercise begins with the take-off from the board or the mat. • A second run approach for the mount is permitted, if the gymnast on her first attempt (balk) has not touched the springboard, or the apparatus. • After a 2nd unsuccessful attempt to mount she should begin the exercise. • – Deduction for “Mount not from the Table of elements” will be applied • – A 3rd attempt is not permitted.

  3. The duration of the exercise on the balance beam may not exceed 1:30 minutes (90 seconds). • The Time Judge 1 (Assistant) begins timing when the gymnast takes-off from the springboard or mat. She stops the clock, when the gymnast touches the mat upon completion of her beam exercise. • A signal (gong) will be communicated ten (10) seconds prior to the maximum time limit and again at the maximum time limit (1:30) to indicate that the exercise is to be finished. • If the dismount lands at the sound of the second signal, there is no deduction. • If the dismount lands after the sound of the second signal, there is a deduction for exceeding the time limit. The judges evaluate the entire exercise including the dismount.

  4. TIMING – Cont’d • The deduction for overtime will be taken, if the exercise is more than 1:30 minutes (90 sec.). - 0.10 P. • Elements performed after the 90 second time limit will be recognized by the D- Panel and evaluated by the E- Panel. • Time violations are reported in writing by the respective Time Judge to the D- Panel judges, who then take the deduction from the Final Score.

  5. Intermediate (fall) time: • For interruption of the exercise due to a fall from the apparatus, an intermediate time period of ten (10) seconds is allowed (Time Judge 2 begins timing when the gymnast is on her feet after the fall). • The duration of the fall is timed separately; it will not be calculated in the total time of the exercise.

  6. Intermediate (fall) time: • The fall period ends when the gymnast takes-off from the mat to remount the beam. • After remounting the beam the resumption of timing by Time Judge 1 begins with the first movement to continue the exercise. • The elapsed time during the fall will be displayed in seconds on the scoreboard. A signal (gong) will be communicated at the 10 second limit. • If the gymnast does not remount the beam by the 10 second time limit, the exercise is considered terminated.

  7. 10.2 Content and Construction of the ExerciseD- Score • The maximum 8 highest difficulties including the dismount are awarded • Maximum 5 Acro • Minimum 3 Dance

  8. COMPOSITIONREQUIREMENTS CR’S

  9. CR - 1 • One connection of at least 2 different dance elements, 1 being a leap, jump or hop with 180° split (cross position only) – award 0.50 On the Beam

  10. CR- 2 — Turns • Not necessarily 360 but needs to be minimum A • From Group 3

  11. CR – 3 • One acro series, min. of 2 flight* elements 1 being a Salto – award 0.50 (elements may be the same) * Flight elements with or without hand support. The elements must be performed on the beam

  12. CR – 4 • —Acro elements in different directions(Acro FWD/SWD and BWD) The elements must be performed on the beam

  13. CR- 5 — Dismount • No dismount, A- or B- dismount +0.00 P. • C- dismount +0.30 P. • D- or higher dismount +0.50 P

  14. Note: • CR 1 - 4 must be performed on the Beam. • Rolls, handstands and holds may not be used to fulfill CR.

  15. Connection Value • Connection Value can be awarded for direct connections. • The CV will be added into the D- Score.

  16. 2 acro flight elements, excluding the dismount * See next slide for description

  17. 2 acro flight elements, excluding the dismount • Connections with rebounding effect develop speed in one direction: • Landing (on 2 feet) from the first flight element with hand support followed by an immediate take-off/rebound into the 2nd element or • Landing from the first element on 1 leg and placing the free leg with an immediate rebound from both legs into 2nd element

  18. CLARIFICATION – ACRO D+D = 0.20 WHEN: • Credit 0.20 for the connection of a front aerials walkover and a forward salto when gymnast is able to land 1st salto (same technique as landing layout backward stepout) and perform 2nd salto fwd with takeoff from 2 feet without pause between the two saltos. • Credit NO CV for connection when there is an interruption of the connection between both elements (Article 5 Direct Connections.)

  19. 3 acrobatic flight elements, including the mount and dismount(DMT minimum D)

  20. A+C = 0.10 (or reversed) The turn may be done on the same support leg or directly onto the other support leg. The connection of turns may be performed with «demi plié» in between but without stop. There should be no preparation for the second turn nor should the free leg should touch the beam. DANCE – TURNS**

  21. CLARIFICATIONS • No CV is awarded if gymnast attempts to perform both turns on the same support leg, but places free foot on the beam after the first turn.

  22. MIXED • C + C or more(excluding dismount)D- salto + A- scale (this order and no step is permitted into scale) • The scale may be performed with or with out hand support. The scale requires 180º. If not 180º, no value and no CV, but no deduction for leg amplitude.

  23. 10.4 • Jumps with 1/1 turn or more performed in a side position will be awarded one DV higher than in a cross position. (if not otherwise listed in Table of Elements)

  24. CV Stipulations • Acro elements can be performed 2 times within the same series for CV but will receive DV only once. (when seen the first time in a connection) • The following B- acro elements can be used a 2nd time in the exercise/dismount for CV only : • Flic-flac with legs together; flic flac with step out, • Gainer flic-flac • Round off • Handspring forward

  25. Dismount with fall: • If the salto for the dismount has not begun (no initiation of rotation) and a fall occurs, or • No attempt for DMT at all (landing on feet or falling after landing on feet) • Example 1: Round off, jump off BB: Evaluation: • No CR (D- panel) • NO DV – count 7 elements only (D- panel) • 0.50 No attempt to dismount (E- panel) • Apply landing deductions (E- panel)

  26. If the salto for the dismount has begun and then a fall occurs: • Example 2: Round off, begin salto dismount, failure to land feet first Evaluation: • No CR (D- panel) • No DV –count 7 elements only (D- panel) • Apply Landing deductions (E- panel)

  27. Artistry Deductions (E Panel)

  28. Specific Execution Deductions

  29. Specific Execution Deductions

  30. Falls • Falls - Acro and Dance Elements - must return to beam with foot or torso to be awarded difficulty • with a landing of one or two feet or in prescribed position on the beam -the DV is awarded • without a landing of one or two feet or in prescribed position on the beam - No DV is awarded

  31. Mounts • Only a round-off may precede the mount • Mount elements (rolls, handstands and holds) may be performed within the routine but receive DV only once for the same element

  32. Holds • Handstands (without turns) & Holds must be held for 2 sec., when prescribed in the table of elements in order to receive DV. If the element is not held for 2 sec. and does not appear as another element in Code award 1 DV lower (HSTD or hold position should be completed).

  33. Holds 5.304 Flic flac with ¼ twist to hdstd hold 2 sec and 5.404 flic flac with ¾ twist hold 2 sec. • will be credited 1 DV lower if the handstand is not held for 2sec • If gymnast performs the same element again in the exercise and holds the HSTD position for 2 sec. - No DV awarded • For CV “holds” acro elements may be used as the 2nd element in an Acro flight series.

  34. Forward ElementsArabian and Onodi • Onodi and Arabian are Forward elements • Onodi can be used as 1st or 2nd element in acro series since it is continuous and moving in same direction • Onodi Tic Toc can only be used as the last element in a series • Onodi and Onodi Tic Toc are considered same element for DV

  35. Onodi (5.407) • if gymnast arrives in handstand, holds 2 seconds but there is no walkover- devalue to a C • if gymnast arrives in handstand, NO hold, NO walkover devalue to a B • if gymnast does not arrive in handstand= NO DV (0)

  36. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS 5.408 Flic Flac with 1/1 twist – swing down to cross straddle sit • hands must land in cross position. If hands land in side position • then the element is awarded 1 DV lower • If gymnast performs the same element again in the exercise and • completes 1/1 twist – No DV awarded

  37. SPECIFIC ELEMENTS 5.408 Flic Flac with 1/1 twist – swing down to cross straddle sit • Hands placed together in Cross position – Correct • Hands one in front of the other in Cross position - Correct • If front hand completed turn - DV awarded (apply deduction for precision) • Hands in Side Position - award C- DV

  38. ELEMENTS - VICO • Back Hip Circle on Beam: A gymnast performs a press to handstand and lowers to a back hip circle. The back hip circle has no value. • Deductions for foot/feet brushing the floor: 0.50; Foot/feet hitting the floor - 1.0 • Bent arms:0.10/0.30/0.50

  39. ELEMENTS • Formerly 1.311 Jump, press or swing to cross or side handstand – lower to clear pike support no longer exists in the Code. • If performed it will receive "B" value for HSTD (2 sec) or for clear pike support (2 sec). If a gymnast performs both: HSTD (2sec) and clear pike support (2 sec) the maximum value she will receive is "B" value.

  40. ELEMENTS • Difference between pike salto (C), whip salto (C), and layout salto (E) • They are considered as different elements. • Pike salto: take-off upward and backward and land almost on the same spot (small distance) • Whip salto: take-off backward in a parabola trajectory, similar to high flic-flac • Layout salto: take-off upward and backward, show a stretched position in flight phase. Body is rotated over the shoulders. In inverted position gymnast must show stretched body. If body pikes before vertical, consider as piked salto.

  41. CLARIFICATION • Whip salto: may be performed as the 2nd element in the connection of 3 elements (including dmt connection). If performed as a single element or last element in a connection it will be recognized as a piked or stretched salto.

  42. CLARIFICATION • Mount leap (1.101): To receive DV a gymnast should show arabesque position on landing (Leg at least horizontal) or show leap with big amplitude. • In order to recognize new element 4.102 gymnast should show split position. If there is no split credit no DV and no deduction for insufficient split.

  43. ―Mounts (Group 1): Elements may be performed as a Mount or within the routine but will receive DV only once (chronological order).‖ • Only the following elements can be utilized: • #1.107 second element • #1.206 • #1.108, #1.208, #1.308 • #1.210, #1.310 • #1.311 (from HSTD), #1.411 • #1.312, #1.412 • #1.213, #1.313, #1.413
