Burns from Scalding Water • Bath Tubs & Showers • Boiling water on the stove • Coffee/Tea

Thermal Burns • Stove • Fireplace • Space Heaters • Matches/Lighters • Light bulbs
Chemical Burns • Cabinet Locks • Keep out of reach
Burns from the sun • First 12 months keep out of direct sun • Babies do not need a tan • No lotion up to one year old
First aid • Cool a burn • Cover
Bleeding • Pressure – add bandage & do not remove • Elevate • ICE • No tourniquets
Drowning • Bath tubs • Pools • Lakes/ponds/rivers • 5 gallon buckets • Toilets
Respiratory • Suffocation • SIDS • Choking

Choking • Blind Cords • Electrical Cords • Rope • Wire • Bottles propped up • Food • Small objects
Shaken Baby Syndrome • Never shake, bounce, toss or play roughly • This can cause serious injuries…even death • Work together
Seizures Febrile Seizures • Caused from a fever “too hot” • Cool the child down
Respiratory System • Is the number 1 cause of cardiac arrest • Children have strong/healthy hearts • Children are nose breathers for the 1st three months
Respiratory Illness • Croup • Upper Airway infection • Produces a “Seal-like” bark • Epiglottitis • Caused by a swollen epiglottis • Needs IMMEDIATE care
Allergic Reactions • Signs and symptoms • Food • Medicine • Lotions
Dehydration • Fontanel is sunken in • No Tears • Dry Diaper
Poisonings • Poisons, Medicines, & Plants • Keep locked up • Keep out of reach • Keep in original containers • Poison Control • 1-800-222-1222
Childproofing your home • Danger Zone – crawl where the child can crawl to, on,and/or reach • Outlets/Appliance Cords • Cabinet Locks/Knob Covers • Safety Gates • Safe Zone
Crib Safety • Keep the crib, bassinet or cradle away from windows,window cords and heaters • Spaces between slats are 2 3/8” or narrower • Snug mattress • No pillow, cushions, stuffed animals or small toys
Fireplaces • Doors • Screens • Gas Heaters • Safe Zone
Walkers • Stairs • Child Gates • Driveways
Pool • Don’t let children out of your sight…even for a minute • Be aware of other peoples pools, not just your own
Pets • Seek medical attention for all dog bites • Contact the police for vaccination information
Bikes, Roller Blades, & Scooters • Helmets • Pads
Children outside the home • Never leave a child alone in a car…even for a minute • Don’t allow your child to play in or around a car
