  1. Candy Lab: Taxonomy Taxonomy is naming, describing, and classifying organisms into different categories on the basis of their appearance and other diagnostic characteristics as well as their evolutionary relationships. 

  2. Classify • Classify your bag into groups with similar characteristics and construct a cladogram explaining each characteristic. • EXAMPLE: Hard and Soft candy; Edible and Nonedible

  3. Questions: • Why was color not a good distinguishing characteristic? • When classifying did you notice the characteristics go from broad to specific or specific to broad. Why? • Why is taxonomy important not only with living things but with a grocery store as well? • Try to group your classifications into Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. EXAMPLE: Kingdom: (Edible and Non-edible) Phylum: (Hard candy, Soft candy; Write, non - Write) Class: (Sticks and non – sticks) (Broad to Specific)
