Rough Costing of ACOB • Costs only include instruments to add-on to ACE B • GMI ~ $20M • SIRICE Radiometer ~$40M • Add contingency $18 M • Add science team $10 M • Total $88 M • ACOB/ACE A = $1,385 M • ACOB B = $242 M + $88 M = $330 M • Total ACOB cost = $1,715 M Adding the microwave instruments adds about 5.5% to the cost of ACE but increases its scientific capability significantly
ACE/ACOB Phase II • Need to drive cost down without significant science loss • Trade space options • Trade coverage vs orbit altitude (lower altitude vs repeat time) • OSSE’s for aerosol science goals • Look at RSDO bus, co-manifest launch • Need to do a IMDC/TeamX for radar/radiometer platform • Instruments • Combine ORCA and Polarimeters • Combine HSRL and Multibeam • Add an ERB or improved IR instrument • Refine concept studies for: • Radar • HSRL & Multibeam lidars • Polarimeters • Radiometers Cost vs Science Concepts D C B A Cost Science Return
