Hinderances To The Gospel “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15).
Adorn the Doctrine Titus 2:10 Sometimes things cause us to lose our appetite. Sickness, or something more unsightly. Breakfast with Bill. Many things hinder the beauty of the gospel. Don’t be one of them. Sanctify, hope, meekness, fear – our attitude toward the truth.
Hypocrisy Sanctify – set apart. 2 Cor. 6:17-18; Rev. 18:4 Purify your hearts so Christ can live there. I Peter 2:9; 4:14-16 Phil. 1:27; Eph. 4:1. Over and over we read these exhortations. How do you view hypocrisy? Romans 2:17-24
Hopelessness “Hope that is within you” This hope prompted questions from friends and enemies. A visible hope – I Pet. 1:3-4 A lasting hope – Matt. 6:19-21 “No one is good enough to go to heaven.” Then why should anyone try? “Blessed assurance…”
Harshness “Meekness” – gentleness, mildness. 2 Tim. 2:24-26; 2 Cor. 10:1; 1 Thess. 2:7 This meekness isn’t cowardly. But the firmness we have is based on “God said,” not our meanness. “…contentions are like the bars of a citadel” (Prov. 18:19). Gal. 6:1; Titus 3:2
Haughtiness “Fear” – respect or honor. Not “holier than thou”. I Cor. 6:9-11; 10:12 Judgment must be rendered by each of us, but not hastily or harshly – Matt. 7:1ff. James 2:13 – “Judgment is without mercy to the one who shows no mercy.” As we explain our faith to others, listen to the Lord’s advice about our attitude. As we approach His truth, let each of us be cautious.
