Snapshot: California County Workforce, Education, and Training Investment • $210 million was distributed statewide to county behavioral health departments to develop and deploy a qualified workforce • 56 counties have completed and implemented local WET plans (all available on the CiMH website) • Nationally recognized workforce efforts (Calaveras, San Bernardino, Siskiyou) • Statewide awards for innovations in county workforce programs • Locally driven, consumer planned programs • Range of approaches reflects unique challenges faced by geographically and culturally diverse counties

Opportunities & Challenges Opportunities • The MHSA has provided a historical and unprecedented opportunity to increase the capacity of California’s public mental health workforce • OSHPD WET Advisory Committee • Health Care Reform Challenges • Limited evaluation of statewide contracts • Disconnect/lack of coordination & synergy between local/regional and statewide projects

Superior Region WET Partnership Priorities “Grow Our Own” • Support the planning, development and implementation of a distance learning system, accessible throughout the Superior Region including articulation agreements between 2 and 4-year institutions. • Encourage the strengthening of curricula in Superior California to support wellness and recovery principles and assure that mental health departments support and encourage career paths through the higher education system. • Identify resources to support training and technical assistance that is accessible, wellness and recovery focused and available in distance education formats.

  7. Superior Region Distributed Learning Humboldt State University Distributed Education MSW & BSW Program: 4 Year Programs – 1 visit to campus per year Fall 2011: BSW Program; 20 Superior Region students enrolled Spring 2012: MSW Program; 15 Superior Region students enrolled July 26, 2012

Superior Region Distributed Learning CSU, Chico BSW and MSW Distributed Education Programs: • 3 year Programs – 2 visits to campus per semester (weekend intensives) • Shasta Center: 3 year MSW program - 37 graduates spring 2012 • Fall 2012: MSW Program enrollment – 40 students • Fall 2012: BSW Program; projected enrollment 15-19 students

CSU, Chico and Humboldt State Distributed Education Programs: • Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council on Social Work Education • Multimedia Learning Formats • Provide Synchronous and Asynchronous Courses • Minimize the need for traditional campus based education • Recovery courses provided within CSU, Chico and Humboldt State CSU Social Work Programs as well as within the CSU, Chico MFT stipend program • Adjunct Faculty hired from County Behavioral Health

  10. Superior Region Next Steps • Mentoring Program • Stimulate Interest in Mental Health Careers • Development of Career Pathways • Engage Community Colleges • Assure Articulation between Community Colleges and CSU • Explore Opportunities to Coordinate with CalMHSA for PEI projects
