What are the 5 parameters of ASL? • Each ASL sign can be broken down and analyzed into five separate features called PARAMETERS. • For a single sign to be correct, each of the five parameters must be used correctly. • 1) Handshape • 2) Palm Orientation • 3) Location • 4) Movement • 5) Non Manual Signals/Facial Expressions

Handshape • Which handshape/classifier are you using? • The handshape difference between I/me and my/mine is simple to identify, yet ASL students often confuse them. • I/me – personal pronoun (pointing) • My/mine – possessive (flat five) • Example 1: I am Mrs. Hollis • Example 2: My Mrs. Hollis

  4. Palm Orientation • Palm Orientation means which way your palm is facing? (up,down, left, or right) • Signing while nervous or without practice can cause many palm orientation errors. • Example: The table is over there. • Palm Orientation for the sign table is???

  5. Answer: • Down

  6. Location • Where is the sign located in reference to your body? (in front, above your head, etc.) • Most signs are made in front of your body! • Keep in mind that some signs are directional and originate away from the body but end close or begin close and terminate away (Ex: help) • Example 1: I’ll see you tomorrow. • Example 2: ?? Tomorrow.

  7. Movement • How does the sign move? • Types of movement: arc, straight line, circular, alternating in/out, twist of the wrist, finger flick • Example 1: I’m happy. • Example 2: I’m enjoy.

  8. Non Manual Signals/Facial Expression • Specific NMS can change the meaning of a sign • Examples – facial expressions, head nods/shakes, eyebrows, nose, eyes, and lips • Sentence: I’m late. Vs. I haven’t. • Sentence: I am going to the bathroom. Vs Am I going to the bathroom?
