Chapter 1.4 Joseph Williams Melvin E. Sine Elementary Jwilliams@gesd40.org • McDougal Littell Middle School Math Course 1 Objective: Use the order of operations.
Vocabulary Numerical Expression – pg. 21 - an expression, consisting of numbers and operations to be performed, that represents a particular value (a math problem with out an equal sign (=) Grouping Symbols – pg. 21 -symbols such as parentheses, brackets, or fraction bars that group parts of an expression.
Vocabulary Evaluate – pg. 21 - to find the value of an expression (find the answer of the problem). Order of Operations – pg. 21 - the order in which to perform operations when evaluating expressions with more than one operation.
Order of Operations • Evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols ( ) [ ] • Evaluate Powers 24 • Multiply and Divide from left to right x and ÷ • Add or Subtract from left to right + and -
Using the Order of Operations 14 – 2 x 5 14 – 2 x 5 = 14 – 10 16 + 4 ÷ 2 - 6 16 + 4 ÷ 2 - 6 = 18 - 6 16 + 2 - 6
Powers and Grouping Symbols 4 + 23 = 4 + 8 (3 +1) x 5 = 4 x 5
Multi Step Problems Your class is going to the zoo. It costs $16 for each adult and $9 for each student. There are 3 adults and 22 students. What is the total cost of admission? Cost for adults Cost for students (3 x 16) + (22 x 9) 48 + 198 = $246 It would cost $246 for your class to go to the zoo.
