Classification • Helicobacter Pylori is considered a bacterium because: • It lacks a nucleus • It’s DNA is found in a single strand • Does not have any organelles besides ribosomes
Characteristics • Rod shaped • Has a flagellum • appear to grow best in the presence of a small amount of free oxygen (microaerophiles)
Mode of Transmission • The infection occurs when a person swallows bacteria in/on: • fluid • containmated utensils • food • Also, items that may contain fecal matter
Infection • Helicobacter pylori causes an infection in the stomach. • Symptoms: Bloating, nausea, vomitting, can cause pain ulcers or stomach cancer • Causes ulcers by weakening the mucus layer in the stomach and injures the • underlying stomach cells
Treatment • It takes about 10-14 days to return to health • Most of the treatment include called a proton pump inhibitor. It decreases the stomach's production of acid, which allows the tissues damaged by the infection to heal.
