Relationship between blood culture volume and rate of positivity of blood cultures • Minimum blood volume for culture and for determining clinical significance is currently unknown • Multi-centre study (February 2013): N=3,932 blood cultures from pts in ICUs and acute care floors collected in BD BACTEC Aerobic/F negative bottles • Blood volume: estimated using BD BACTEC FX instrument: Range: 1.0-7.0 ml There does not seem to be a correlation between blood culture volume and rate of true positive or contaminated blood cultures Mann T.
