Why Bother? • Provides format for citing information • Allows the reader to cross-reference your writing and sources • Gives you credibility and prevents accusations of plagiarism
Some General Information • 1” margins • Size of font should be 12 and consistent throughout paper • No need for cover page • Should use several sources • Authors should be alphabetized on the Works Cited Page • Your name, my name, the class title and date should be placed in the left hand corner of your first page. • First page and all following pages should have your last name and a page number as a header in the upper right corner. • The first page should have the full title of your paper centered.

Works Cited Page • List of all sources that you reference in your essay. • Provides information to the reader for location and retrieval of sources cited in your essay.

When to Use Parenthetical Resources • When quoting using words that do not belong to you. • When summarizing taking ideas and making them your own words (Do NOT copy and paste something into a document and merely change a few words. This is NOT summarizing.)
How to Quote in Text • Place the author’s last name and page number of quote in parenthesis within the text. • Ex. Going to the mall is a very “difficult and terrible job” (Miller 246). • Ex. Miller stated that going to the mall is a very “difficult and terrible job” (246)
Parenthetical Citations in Text • When more information is necessary • Citing indirect sources • Ex. (Kennedy qtd. in Marshall 246) • Source with no author Use the first word of the entire title. • Ex. Entire title “Oregon Bans Fireworks.” • Ex. PSR (“Oregon” A12)
