Ductility in highly nanotwinned Cu Andrea M Hodge, University of Southern California, DMR 0955338 In year 2, the research has been mostly focused on understanding the enhanced ductility of nanotwinned (nt) materials. Our main finding to date has been to show that the observed “enhanced ductility” is due to the mutual effect of very low temperatures testing (decrease in heat capacity) and the presence of a yield peak. However, it must be emphasized that the deformation mode for these materials was always by shear band formation and occurred inhomogeneously. Representative mid-section of a tensile specimen deformed at 10-4/s strain rate at a temperature of 77K. Critical locations in the deformed sample were analyzed using cross-sectional FIB micrographs, image: view direction is shown by two-headed arrows.
Ductility in highly nanotwinned CuAndrea M Hodge, University of Southern California, DMR 0955338 The PI served as meeting co-chair for the International Materials Research Congress (IMRC). The conference is co-organized by the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Sociedad Mexicana de Materiales (SMM). This conference brings together over 1200 materials scientists worldwide including over 60% participation from Latin America. In addition, The PI participated in Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) – Graduate Institute in October 2010. In this program undergraduates and graduate students are exposed to graduate school and participate in presentation competitions during the conference.
