Frame Relay-What Next for it? Some limitations of Frame Relay by AmeenSikander Roll No: 06-32 Programme: BS(IT) 2007-11
Moving towards standardization • Frame-Relay Forum (FRF) • International Telegraphic Union (ITU).
ISSUES • Compression • Packetization • Prioritization
Compression • What is Compression? • Reduction in Size • Reduction in Computer Data
Compression • In February 1998, the ITU ratified an umbrella standard called H.323. • It supports VOFR (Voice Over Frame Relay).
Compression • It compresses voice traffic from 64 kbps to 8kbps. • It incorporates with other new standards such as G.729 & G.723.
Packetization • What is Packetization? • Division into smaller Units. • Division of data into small units called Packets.
Packetization • FRF. 12 will support division of data into packets. • Smaller packets help in predicting significant delay.
Prioritization • What is Prioritization? • rank things according to importance. • Reserve a resource for communication on priority basis.
Prioritization • Only RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol) supports traffic prioritization. • It is limited when compared to ATM’s Qos. • But it is dynamic i.e. it activated automatically whenever voice data are on the line.
