  1. Lit 251 A Day Without Jim! Or How Kelly Hagen and Katey King Saved the Day

  2. Our Game Plan • Step 1: Grab Folder / Sign Up for Verbal Exam • Step 2: Complete “Scene Analysis #2” • Step 3: Watch The TopDog Diaries • Step 4: 30 Minute Scene Rehearsal • Step 5: Complete Preparation/Participation Form • Step 6: Return Folder-- Finish Ceremony for Monday

  3. Step 1 • Please grab your folder from the box in the back of the room (if you have not already done so) • Hey Richard, I found yours!! • Please also sign up for a Verbal Exam time for the second half of next week (we will review verbal exam format on Monday).

  4. Step 2: Scene Analysis • Please check your folder for the “Scene Analysis #2” form. If you cannot find the form in your folder, please just quietly steal your neighbor’s. • Please answer the first question in an informal, journal style format. Do not worry about writing the perfect paragraph (Marilyn!), just share your thoughts. • Then write down—from memory—no looking at your play—that includes you Ty, you wild man—your twenty lines. Yep, that’s right—all twenty of them!

  5. Step 3: TopDog Diaries • Please taunt Katey as she attempts to insert The TopDog Diaries DVD into the player and play scenes 12-16 (Katey, you should have been setting this up while the students were writing—what were you thinking!) • The section we want to watch ends with the end of the play—when Lincoln kills Booth. After it ends, take a few minutes to share your thoughts with your group. • If time permits, the class may wish to ask David and Emily to recreate the performances of Jeffrey Wright and Don Cheadle, focusing of course on some of the play’s most offensive language. Alternatively, Delaine, Amanda, and Robert could perform an interpretive dance about the feelings they had while watching the video (or, for that matter, while watching David and Emily perform!). Meagan simultaneously mime a narration of each of these performances. Cass, would you mind cooking up some Kentucky Wonders for the class while all of this other stuff goes on? Wouldn’t that be a great name for a punk rock group? “Ladies and Gentlemen, Kenneth Jamison and his Kentucky Wonders!”

  6. Step 4: 30 Minute Scene Rehearsal • Please take 30 minutes to practice your scene together • The goal—to perform all your lines from memory and incorporate the blocking (movement) that you have worked out. You should have time to walk through the whole scene fifteen or sixteen times. Courtney’s group certainly will achieve this goal, so I do not understand what’s up with the rest of you! • Remember, get out of your seats—spread out in the room—or just outside the room • You will need to return with 5-10 minutes left in class to complete your Class Participation and Preparation form.

  7. Step 5: Week 15 Form • Please complete the Week Fifteen Class Participation Form that you should find in your folder. If you cannot find one in your folder, check with Renae: she’s been hording some extras. But be careful when you approach Renae. If you agitate her, she may lose it and cut off her finger tip… I know, I know, it’s weird, but some people really take Sula and their extra copies of the class forms personally…. • Note (and complete) the extra question at the bottom of the form. Everyone name Kate / Katie / Katey should fill that question out. The three students in the class who have some name other than Kate, Katie, or Katey should answer that question as well.

  8. Step 6: The End • Please return your folder to the box (I know, Samantha, parting with your folder is such sweet sorrow…but you must…no really Samantha…just let go of the folder and move on with your life…Samantha?) • Finish Ceremony for Monday! Really. I mean it! Amazing book! You need it for the verbal exam!! How many more exclamation marks can I fit in this PowerPoint!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Special thanks to Kelly Hagen and Katey King for making this lovely learning experience possible today. Can we all just give them a big round of applause? Why aren’t Kyle and Brigid clapping? That’s harsh! (Hey look, one more exclamation point!)
