Company Information Hazardous Ingredients Physical Data Fire and Explosion Data Health Hazard Data Reactivity Data Spill & Leak Procedures Special Protection Information Special Precautions Hazard Communication(Material) Safety Data Sheets Safety Data Sheets are replacing MSDSs after 2013.
(Material) Safety Data Sheets:Your Rights 1. Your employer must have an MSDS or SDS for every hazardous substance you use as part of your job. They are online at http://www.durhamtech.edu/faculty/safety/
Finding (M)SDS Information Online • Main DTCC web under QuickLinks: Emergency and Safety Information • Under DTCC Emergency Information: Chemical Safety Data • Directly: www.durhamtech.edu/faculty/safety/
MSDS & SDS onwww.durhamtech.edu/faculty/safety If you are in a Chemistry Lab, click the “Chemistry” link
Searching for (M)SDS Information • Type Ctrl-f for search-box (will appear on top or bottom of window) • Type part of the name or CAS# - the first ‘hit’ will be highlighted • Press the Enter-key to go to the next match • Click the link for (M)SDS
CLICK to View Actual Sheets Hazards: (M)SDS • SDS has the Hazards in Section 2. • MSDS has the Hazards in Section 3.
Every SDS Has These Sections • Section 1, Identification • Section 2, Hazard(s) • Section 3, Composition/ingredients • Section 4, First-aid & symptoms/effects • Section 5, Fire-fighting measures • Section 6, Accidental release measures • Section 7, Handling and storage • Section 8, Exposure controls & PPE.
Every SDS Has These Sections • Section 9, Physical and chemical properties • Section 10, Stability and reactivity. • Section 11, Toxicological information • Section 12, Ecological information • Section 13, Disposal considerations • Section 14, Transport information • Section 15, Regulatory information • Section 16, Other information
(Material) Safety Data Sheets:Your Rights 2. These MSDS or SDS must be available to you the entire time you are in the workplace. At DTCC (M)SDS sheets are available on-line and sometimes as a printed copy with the chemicals being used.
(Material) Safety Data Sheets:Your Rights If you request to see a copy of an MSDS/SDS for a product you use, and your supervisor cannot provide it after one working day, you may refuse to use that product or work in an area where it is being used. Note: Most (M)SDS are Online
(Material) Safety Data Sheets:Your Rights 4. If you request your own personal copy of an MSDS/SDS, your employer has 15 days to provide it. Ask your supervisor or the Safety Officer. Note: Online copies are printable
Durham Technical Community CollegeHazard Communication Labeling and Marking Systems
Labeling and Marking Systems • NFPA Diamonds • HMIS Labels • GHS Labels and Pictograms • Uniform Laboratory Hazard Signage System
Labeling and Marking SystemsNFPA Diamonds • Color coded, numerical rating system • Will be located near main entrances, fire alarm panels, or on outside entrance doors • Provide at-a-glance hazard information
Labeling and Marking SystemsNFPA Diamonds • Blue = Health • Red = Flammability • Yellow = Instability • White = Special hazard information
Labeling and Marking SystemsNFPA Diamonds • 4= Deadly Hazard • 3= Severe Hazard • 2= Moderate Hazard • 1= Slight Hazard • 0= No Hazard
Labeling and Marking SystemsHMIS Labels • Designed to go on individual containers of products that don’t have the manufacturer’s labels • Uses the same color code/numerical rating system as the NFPA diamonds 3 0 1
Labeling Containers • You should never have any unattended, unlabeled hazardous chemical containers in your workplace! • Never use food containers for storage of hazardous chemicals! • Help with an unlabeled container: talk to your supervisor or the Safety Officer.
The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Hazard Classification and Labeling • Replaces our current system • Old labels gradually replaced • Old NFPA Diamonds on bottles replaced by Pictograms • Old NFPA 0-4 rating replaced by GHS category 5-1 • MSDSs replaced by SDSs
NFPA compared to GHS Ratings Old New NFPA GHS Category 1severe hazard Category 2serious hazard Category 3moderate hazard Category 4slight hazard Category 5minimal hazard 4 = severe 3 = serious 2 = Moderate 1 = Slight 0 = Minimal NOTE: 4 is severe in NFPA but corresponds to Category 1 in GHS Big numbers bad in NFPA but Little numbers are bad in GHS.
