Heavy Truck Propane Diesel Injection A Solution for Our Planet Today…And Tomorrow. By The Intigreen PDI Group
What is Propane Diesel Injection? • Diesel truck engines burn only 70% to 80% of the diesel fuel run through them. • The rest (20% to 30%) is exhausted to the environment. • This is not only a waste of fuel, but also a major contributor to air pollution, greenhouse gasses, and global warming. • Injecting a small amount of propane gas in with the diesel fuel, causes the diesel to burn almost completely. • By burning all of the fuel, we increase fuel efficiency, and almost eliminate the polluting air emissions.
Diesel Engine Propane Injectionis not New… A by-product of diesel engine propane injection is horsepower, and lot’s of it! A near doubling of horsepower can be achieved. But this is not necessarily a good thing when it comes to stressing engine and driveline components. In the 1950’s, farmers in cold climates discovered that they could use propane to run their tractors when temperatures were too low for diesel fuel to remain liquid. Propane burns in a power stroke nearly identical to diesel fuel. Therefore, a diesel engine can be converted to run on propane with no change necessary in valve timing or piston stroke.
Existing Propane Injection SystemsFocus on Horsepower – Not Mileage • Several companies in the US manufacture and sell propane injection systems. • All but two are focused on the smaller sports diesel trucks, pick-ups, SUV’s, etc. • Each of them sell horsepower increase as the number one reason to buy their product. • Fuel savings is secondary, as is emissions reduction.
The Real Value of Propane Injection is in Fuel Savings for Commercial Trucks • A Class 7-8 diesel truck averages 5 to 6 MPG. • Properly injected, propane will increase this mileage by 1 to 3 MPG – a 20% to 60% increase in fuel mileage. • The amount of propane necessary to accomplish this is fractional – about 1 gal. every 20 to 30 miles (a 15% to 20% mix). • Propane in the US sells for 40% to 60% less than diesel fuel, and is available at over 900 truck stops. • Local and regional haulers can install propane tanks at their own facilities, and refuel their own trucks at wholesale fuel prices.
The Greatest Impact of Propane Injection is Greenhouse Gas Reduction • A by-product of propane injection is the near elimination of carbon particulate emissions from diesel motors. • Each pre-2007 Class 7 & 8 truck emits well over 20 US tons of carbon - every year - into the air. • Diesel trucks are one of the largest contributors in the world to greenhouse gasses. • By burning all of the diesel fuel, we eliminate the vast majority of the carbon emissions from diesel trucks. • We use less diesel fuel, and the entire planet • benefits from the technology.
The “Ideal” Propane Injection System? • The “ideal” propane injection system would: • Burn all of the diesel fuel while not substantially increasing the horsepower. • Provide maximum fuel savings. • Virtually eliminate the particulate carbon emissions. • Not put undue stress on the mechanical components. • Not affect or void warranties. We have the only PDI system that does this.
The EcoDiesel Propane Injection System • Fully electronic, with the most sophisticated fuel mapping processor in the business. • Fuel flow is infinitely regulated based on load, boost and internal engine operating conditions. • Average mileage increase is 1.5 to 3 MPG. • Horsepower increase can be limited to 10% to 15% - well within OEM stress specifications.
Overview of Benefits • Net savings in fuel cost per commercial truck is $8,000 to $15,000 per year (miles driven and fuel price determined). • May replace the need for mandated $25,000 emissions retrofits on 300,000+ older California trucks. • Will extend the life of the new truck particulate filters (replacement cost: $6,000) by 10X. • Reduces oil change/service intervals. Propane nearly eliminates the carbon that fouls and breaks down oil. • Extends engine life due to the reduction of abrasive carbon in the cylinders, heads, and crankcase. • Costs less than $5,000 to install. ROI is less than 1 year.
Cost Savings Example Assumptions: 1) Propane injection ratio to diesel fuel @ 15% 2) Average 37% increase in diesel fuel mileage with propane injection
Markets & Applications • All diesel trucks – regardless of their size or age. • Long haulers, short haulers, regional haulers, garbage trucks, city delivery trucks, busses. • All countries of the world who have diesel trucks and a supply of propane. • US Market: $150+ Billion
