  1. HERBAL DRUG EXTRACTION, PROCESSING & PRESERVATION NIXON ELACHI ETHNOBOTANICAL R&D OFFICER DE-LAIKIPIA WILDLIFE FORUM

  2. METHODS OF EXTRACTIONGrinding • Suitable for well dried materials such as dried leaves, bark, seeds and roots • A mortar for small quantities, dry blender or Grinder can be used for larger quantities. • The powder can be packed in satchets, jars or plastic bags • It is the best method for long term drugs • Examples; nettle leaf and powder, Seketete.t.c

  3. Boiling • Commonly used in tough fibrous plant materials for maximum extraction and sterilization • Such drugs have a shorter shelf life since bacteria tend to grow due to the presence of microbial growth • However, extracts that have been concentrated thro this method stay for long e.g. Aloe gum

  4. Tincture Food grade alcohol is mixed with the medicinal plant material and let for 2 weeks, then pressed and filtered Such extracts also have a long shelf life Appropriate for very strong/powerful herbal species e.g nettle root tincture

  5. Distillation • It gives a more purified extract • Essential oils are extracted using this method e.g. lemon grass oil, ocimum oil etc. • A double jacket vessel is used in this scenario • Small scale establishment can locally carry out distillation

  6. Dosage forms/presentation • Capsules • Tablets • Ointment & balm (for external use) • Powder • Tincture • Syrup • Gaseous (for sniffing) e.t.c

  7. Storage/preservation • Hygiene is the key to good herbal medicine storage • Green-dried leaf materials are best stored under low temperatures to avoid denaturing the proteins • Powder materials should be in water-proof container in dry cool place • Volatile oils like essential oils must be tightly closed in amber bottles

  8. Sanitation • Always maintain personal hygiene e.g. washing hands and thoroughly cleaning the herbal materials • Use gloves when handling herbs and a nose mask to avoid contamination • Put on a lab coat • Storage areas must be clean and not where animals are kept • Sneezing or coughing when handling medicine is unacceptable
