WP6: Presentation overview • Objectives • Participants • Description of work & role of partners • Deliverables & Planning • Progress • Discussion/Comments
WP6: Objectives 1. Coordination with European and international stakeholders 2. Dissemination / Outreach activity
WP6: Description of Work & Role of partners • Task 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • Workshops (3x) • Website • Task 6.2 Advisory Board input to CORECLIMAX • Policy briefs (3x) • Task 6.3 Capacity building activities • Training courses (2x)
WP6: 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • Coordinating activities include coordinating with: • EU Copernicus / DG CLIMA /DG JRC • Copernicus projects: MACC, GEOLand2, MyOcean • ESA CCI • EUMETSAT including the SAF network • WMO GSICS and SCOPE-CM initiatives • WCRP: WOAP and GEWEX - data set assessments • Reanalysis producers and data providers in Europe (FP7 projects & regional efforts) • Reanalysis producers outside Europe (e.g., NOAA, NCAR, NASA, JMA) • International collaborations
WP6: 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • CORECLIMAX will help to establish best practices for GMES climate service in: • Calibration and validation of observations and derived products • Quality control/assurance of observations and derived products • Formulating requirements to have a digitized archive of as many observations as possible, satellite & in-situ • Conformity to GCOS climate monitoring principles and CDR generation guidelines (GCOS-143, 2010) • Resulting in digital forum on the project’s website (D6.64), 3 areas; • Central Copernicus CDR forum • Central CDR/ECV validation forum • Central reanalysis forum • Three workshops (D6.61 - D6.63) will be organized and participated in relevant workshops
WP6: 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • CORECLIMAX will further review the current implementation status for the GCOS ECVs: • Consider where Satellite observations contribute including ESA CCI and EUMETSAT SAFs, • Consider where in-situ observations contribute including current feedback from the EEA GISC project, • Suggest which ECVs are of prioritization for their use in climate services, and • suggest which ECVs are poorly monitored and require attention, to GMES Bureau, DG CLIMA and DG JRC. • This will generate D6.67 (Synthesis report) • ITC, EUMETSAT, ECMWF, DWD and FMI will contribute to this task
WP6: 6.2 Advisory Board input to CORECLIMAX • AB members will provide input by: • Providing external emerging initiatives and opportunities to the CORECLIMAX consortium • Participating in the coordination forum workshops • This will generate D6.68 – D6.610; 2-paged documents to policy makers • Delivered at months 12, 24 and 30
WP6: 6.3 Capacity building activities • CORECLIMAX will develop two dedicated training courses: • One on the generation of ECVs and validations (using results from WP2,3) • Another on the use of ECVs in reanalysis and applications in climate change detection and attribution services (using results from WP4,5) • This will generate D6.65 & D6.66; to be delivered at months 12 and 24 • Content will be defined by month 6 and 18 respectively • Announcement will take place at least 6 months before the training courses • Action? • Comments / remarks / ideas?
WP6: Progress • Activities • Task 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • Task 6.2 Advisory Board input to CORECLIMAX • Task 6.3 Capacity building activities • Tangible results • Deliverable 6.61 Kick-off Meeting, 17-18 January 2013 • Deliverable 6.64 Project Website, 3 April 2013 • Problems: None • Alterations in original planning: None • Comments
WP6: Progress, Activities • Task 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • Kick-off Meeting, ITC building, 17-18 January 2013 • Current meeting ;-) • Collocation Meeting European ECV projects, 15-16 May 2013 • Several international workshops visited by project members; • Space Science & Exploration Workshop, 18/19 Feb 2013, Madrid • GEO Water Strategy European Workshop, 17/18 Apr 2013, Barcelona • 9th IGWCO-COP Science and Planning Meeting, 18/19 Apr 2013, Barcelona • Abstract to ESA Living Planet Symposium, 9-13 Sep 2013, Edinburgh • Abstract to EMS & ECAM, 9-13 Sep 2013, Reading • EUMETNET Expert team meeting, 3-5 Apr 2013, De Bilt • Meeting on Regional Reanalysis, 25 Feb-1 Mar 2013, KNMI, De Bilt • EURO4M user meeting, 14 May 2013, Offenbach
WP6: Progress, Activities • Task 6.1 Thematic coordinating with international activities • Digital forum: website http://coreclimax.itc.nl • Activities ongoing to obtain .EU domain • Home-page, project overview, project organization, workshops, publications, login • To be developed; • Central Copernicus CDR forum • Central CDR/ECV validation forum • Central reanalysis forum • Suggestions/comments?
WP6: Progress, Activities • Task 6.2 Advisory Board input to CORECLIMAX • Extensive communication between AB members and ITC, EUMETSAT, ECMWF; • Maturity Index • Input AB members in PM (14 May) and CM (15/16 May) • Task 6.3 Capacity Building activities • Skeleton for first Capacity Building Training Course is made • Selected venue: EUMETSAT premises • Preliminary date: 21-23 Jan 2014 • Training course thought to be parallel to mid-term Progress Meeting at same venue
WP6: Discussion/Comments • David: There would be great benefit from establishing continuous co-ordination (instead of one-off project) to address the following: • Collection/sharing of reanalysis user experience • Development of benchmark indicators of reanalysis performance and quality • Having a layer of “well-informed” users to advise less-informed users • Education and training • It could be useful to link S-RIP with Capacity Building; They may need some training in the use of reanalysis, but may also be able to assist in providing such training to others (i.e. become "well-informed" users to advise "less-informed" users)
WP6: Discussion/Comments • Wim: • Definition of content for first training course? • Website • Central Copernicus CDR forum • Central CDR/ECV validation forum • Centrsl reanalysis forum • Hilppa: • Any other?
