Feeding • Breast feeding • At first 10-12 times a day • First milk is colostrum, full of protein, fat and antibodies. • May want to consult a lactation consultant • Doctors recommend demand feeding. ( feed when baby is hungry instead of on a schedule) • Feed until they stop • Mother avoid eating chocolate, spicy foods and strong flavored veggies such as broccoli
Bottle Feeding • Eat every 3-4 hours • Use formula that pediatrician recommends • Drinks 3-4 ounces each feeding • Bottles and nipples MUST be sterilized • No juice under 6 months • Give 100 % juice NOT juice drinks
Spitting up is normal • Spit up because of an allergy, sensitive to milk, medication or vitamin supplement. • Most common in formula feed babies • Usually outgrow spitting up after 6 months
Solid Foods • Swallowing solid food is a new skill for baby so it take practice. • Recommendations: • Don’t rush solid foods – 4-6 months, milk only • Introduce one food at a time and gradually • Start with cereal • Choose nutritional foods – best ones are those with the least ingredients. Ex plain pears instead of pears with syrup • Be patient – they may refuse a food several times before they except it. • Self-Feeding usually begins around 9 months • Finger foods are best at the first attempt of self feeding
Diapering • A newborn wets at least 6-10 times a day for the first 1-2 months • Change after every bowel movement and when obviously wet. • Never leave a baby unattended while changing a diaper • Apply a medicated ointment if the baby has diaper rash • Clean the surface after changing a diaper
Dressing an infant • Generally an infant needs one more layer of clothing than adults • A cotton knit sleeper is a good choice of clothing for infants.
Bathing • Infants can not be given a bath until the umbilical cord falls off. This should happen within the 3 wks. Sponge bath them • Use a baby tub with elevated end for infants • Bath 2-3 times a week for infant is enough until they begin to crawl
Bath Time Safety • Be sure all electrical outlets and appliances are out of reach of a splash or spill range • Put all items needed close by but out of range of baby • 2-3 inches of water • Room and water should be warm not hot • If baby can not sit up keep arm around baby for support • Never turn away or leave the room • Shampoo the scalp 1-2 times a week • Wrap the baby in a towel and pat dry. Their skin in very tender for a few months
Sleeping • Newborns need 16-20 hours the first month • Some newborns get their days and nights mixed up. This is common • Most babies begin to sleep through the night by 3 months • By 5 months baby sleeps 14-15 hours out of 24 with 3-4 one hour naps a day • By 1 year most take 1 nap a day
SIDS • Always place the baby on their back to sleep • Purchase a firm mattress • Remove soft toys and loose bedding • Make sure baby’s face is uncovered at all times • Do not allow anyone to smoke around baby • Don’t let baby become overheated while sleeping
When to call the doctor • Abdominal pain • Excessive sleeping • Feeding difficulty • Fever of 100.4 or higher • Stomach virus • Emergencies • Baby is a blue color • Signs of dehydration • Signs of Shock • Difficulty breathing • Head injury • Poisoning • Reaction to immunization
Ways to promote physical and intellectual development • Play patti cake and move legs and arms around • Provide experiences for baby to see, touch, taste, smell and listen • Encourage visual development by having family and neighbors visit • Provide toys • Encourage crawling and walking • Encourage language skills. Always talk to your baby
Ways to promote emotional and social development • Hold, rock, walk, and dance with your baby • Using loving words and talk to them often • Providing early positive interaction provides a foundation for getting along in the world as they grow and begin school
