FP7 2007-2013 • European Commission's instrument for supporting R&D • Budget - over €50 Billion; Term - 7 years • Key route to internationalisation in Ireland’s STI Strategy • Substantially improved opportunities for industry The programme is bigger and longer term than ever before, Ireland performed well in FP6 (€200m from a €17.8bn budget) and Ireland’s ability to leverage funding is at an all-time high

  4. The National Support Network for FP7 • New National Support Network headed by a National Director • Dedicated national office at heart of a distributed network of delegates and full-time contact points • National Experts assigned to all areas

What We Do • Fund • Advise • Influence and Represent • Provide “hands-on” support covering all stages in the project lifecycle We speak your language - knowledge-based We cover ALL parts of the programme - trans-disciplinary; horizontal approach We support ALL participants - we will facilitate directly and indirectly across the constituencies

FP7 – key activities I • National Launch – Nov 2006 • General promotion • Attendance: 530 attendees at 5 events to date • Theme-specific information days • Attendance: >1700 attendees at 24 events • Multiple client-specific activities • Universities, IoTs, industry associations, MNCs, SMEs, others

FP7 – key activities II • Launch of revamped financial supports (Mar 2007): • Travel Support - grants up to a maximum of €3,000 for multiple visits • Coordination Support - grants up to a maximum of €25,000 • Feasibility Study for Companies - grants up to a maximum of €25,000 • Proactive ‘Marketing’ of FP7 Ireland locally and internationally • Branding • Website • Raising awareness of Ireland’s excellence in S&T at President and Ambassador-hosted meetings in Brussels

Financial Support ‘Results’ – early days • Travel Support – 188 applications approved in 8 months [compare to 261 for FP6 2002-2006] • Coordination Support – 43 applications approved [33 for FP6 2003-2006] • Feasibility Study for Companies – 15 applications approved • Evidence of a high level of FP7 proposal preparation activity on the ground • We will have given out more financial support in 1 year of FP7 than in the whole of FP6

First Call ‘Results’ – evaluation reports • ICT: over €15 million for Irish researchers - 40% to enterprise • Health: over €6 million - 39% • Agrifood: €3.8 million – 18% • Transport: €2 million – 22% • Energy: €1.6 million - 26% • Research Infrastructures: €1.8 million • SME-specific: €1.5 million • Ideas/ERC: 4 of 120 Irish proposals successful in Stage 1 [in >9000 applications]

Some Take Home Messages • There is evidence of a high level of FP7 proposal preparation activity on the ground • There is more support available nationally than ever before – in terms of knowledge and finance • Extremely positive First Call results are emerging – suggesting no lag period at programme start (as seen in FP5 and FP6)
