Take A Trip to…. The BEAUTIFUL Growing Power By: Choua Her Mai Vang Yang
The Goals of Growing Power • To Inspire communities to build sustainable food systems that are equitable and ecologically sound, creating a just world, and one food-secure community at a time
What is it? • Growing Power • A national and local farm that helps • Communities to be self-dependent • Make their own food system • A non-profit community where people from different backgrounds help create • Healthy organic foods that’s affordable • Healthy environment where we reuse materials to reduce waste
History… • Started—1993 by Will Allen • Which was an organization that started because there were teens who needed a place to work • Help kids grow food for community • Last remaining farm & only Greenhouse operation in Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s Growing Power • Growing power… • Headquarter is in Milwaukee, WI • Branch off to Chicago, IL • Both do different projects, but IL focused more on plants as a whole and projects pertaining to growing plants • Where Milwaukee’s growing power focused on a variety of plants, animals, and where different projects are done
More about Growing Power… • Milwaukee’s Growing Power is a 2 acre farm • Where, projects are demonstrated, plants are grown, with many livestock that includes • 6 greenhouses • Such as Livestock, chicken, ducks, turkey, etc • Worm house • Fish farming house used for plants
Projects At Growing Power • Grow • Soil= Important for planting • Use to grow compost/ Vermicompost • Control pest with help from smaller insects and compost tea from bacteria = grow sufficiently • DO NOT use any chemicals. WHY? • May cause effect in food we eat • Aquaponics • Tilapia & Yellow Perch fish are used… • Crops and fish are grown together in a recirculation environment • Plants absorbs the nutrients from fish waste • Plants than reduce the effect of toxic for animals
Continue…. • Bees • Apiaryshelter for beehives • Collect nectar • White clover and basswood • Uses to make an appealing texture • One hive creates about 150 pounds of honey per year • Vermicompost • Red Wigglers and Red Earthworms are used • to create rich nutrients, fertilizer for organics, and conditioner for soil • 2 Methods used • a worm bin system (walls needed) • a windrow (no walls needed)
Continue… • Livestock • Wide variety of livestock use for fertilizer, milk production, and protein source • Worms, fish, chicken, ducks, turkey, & goats • Fed on a veggie diet mostly • NO antibiotics or growth hormones is used • Compost • Made from recycled food, farm, and brewery waste • Which goes on to how vermicomposting is used • Worm is raised to have a healthy pop. • Later used as fertilizer
Chicago Growing Power… • Contains 5 outdoor gardens • Contained and mostly focus on plants • Which also sells fruits and vegetables, own market for community • Green city market • 61st Street Experimental Station Farmer's Market • Bronzeville Farmer's Market
Main Greenhouses…. • 1= entrance with market and orientation • 2= plants that contain salad mix, beet green, and arugula • 3=contains some green, but mostly worm bins • 4=volunteers sign in along with the bean spouts and sugar canes and greens • 5=new fish tank with aquaponics project • 6= sifting for rich soil, contains mustards, herbs and seedings
Experiences at Growing Power Day 1: We started a new fish project. Day 2: We use the soil from the worm bin, sift in to greenhouse 3 to get rich nutrients.
