  2. There’s more than 1 way to talk in the past? • ¡¡¡Sí!!! In English too, there are ways other than the simple past tense to say that something happened. • Simple past tense: I studied (Preterite) • Other ways to express past tense: I used to study, or I was studying (these 2 ideas in the past use a NEW VERB TENSE IN THE PAST!) • In Spanish, these ideas are expressed by the imperfect tense. • Preterite: Estudié • Imperfect: Estudiaba

  3. How do we form the imperfect? Regular -ar verbs: trabajaba trabajábamos trabajabas X trabajaba trabajaban Regular -er/-ir verbs: leía leíamos leías X leía leían Note that the yo form and the usted/ él/ ella forms are the same.

  6. ¡Practicamos! [SER, IR, VER] Veía… Iba… Era… Íbamos… Veían… 6. Eras… • 1. I used to see… • 2. I used to go… • 3. I used to be… • 4. We used to go… • 5. They used to see… • 6. You used to be… CONJUGATE IN THE IMPERFECT!!!

  7. YIPPPPEEEEEEEEEE • There are NO verbs that will stem change! • Treat them as normal regular verbs! • I used to serve Servía • You used to return Volvías • We used to think Pensábamos

  8. When do we use the imperfect? • to talk about habitual or customary actions in the past I used to ride my bike to school everyday. Montaba …… Ana always took the bus to school. Ana tomaba… The boys generally played soccer together. …jugaban.. From time to time, we went to Julie Ann’s. ….íbamos… At times you listened to Taylor Swift. …..escuchabas…

  9. To talk about things I used to do: • Cuando yo era niña, siempre jugaba Sega Genesis. Mi juego favorito era Sonic the Hedgehog.

  10. MORE TIMES TO USE THE IMPERFECT TENSE: • to express “”was-ing” “were- ing” He was crying. Lloraba. Tomás was studying. Tomás estudiaba. I was watching T.V. Miraba la tele. You were eating Doritos. Comías Doritos. Ricardo and I were doing our homework. Ricardo y yo hacíamos nuestra tarea.

  11. More times to use The Imperfect Tense: • TWD (to express TIME, WEATHER, or DATES) • Era la una. It was 1:00. • Eran las tres. It was 3:00.

  12. Weather to talk about the weather IN THE PAST use the Imperfect. Hacía sol. It was sunny. Hacia frío. It was cold. Estaba nublado. It was cloudy. Llovía. (llover)It was raining.

  13. Dates To talk about dates in the past, use imperfect. Era martes, el 12 de abril 2008 cuando… Era septiembre cuando… Use forms of SER to talk about dates on the calendar.

  14. With DESCRIPTION IN THE PAST, USE THE IMPERFECT TENSE Carlos was tall but strong. Carlos era alto pero fuerte. He was sick yesterday. Estaba enfermo ayer. María was 16 when… María tenía 16 años cuando…
