  7. Review of the main points of previous sermons Part One: The Revelation of God’s Righteousness (1:1–8:39) IV.Sanctification: The Power & Promise of God’s Righteousness (6:1-8:39) Objection/Excuse #1 – I can keep sinning so God’s grace abounds (6:1-14)       A.     We are Dead to Sin – baptized (immersed) with Christ 1. Death (Crucified with Christ) - Christ: Died to sin once for all, death no longer has Mastery over Him - Us: No longer slaves to sin 2. Burial (Buried with Christ) - Body of sin done away with B.     We are Alive to God - raised with Christ 3. Resurrection (Raised with Christ) - Christ: Raised and never to die again, Alive and lives to God - Us: Walk in newness of life > Don’t let sin reign in our mortal bodies/instruments of unrighteousness > Present yourself to God as alive/instruments of righteousness Promise: “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”

  8. Review of the main points of previous sermons Part One: The Revelation of God’s Righteousness (1:1–8:39) Objection/Excuse #2 – I can sin because I’m not under law but under grace (6:15-23) C. We are a Slave either to sin or to righteousness (Cannot serve two masters Matthew 6:24, Luke 16:13, He who is not with me is against me Matthew 12:30, Mark 9:40, Luke 11:23, 6:46) 1. The reason you present yourself as a slave to someone is FOR obedience 2. You are slaves to what you obey (2 Corinthians 13:5, 1 John 1-5) a. Either you present yourself as slaves to sin resulting in death (separation from God) or you b. Present yourself as a slave to obedience resulting in righteousness (reconciliation with God ) 3. Example of the Romans who used to be slaves to sin, but became obedient from the heart to the form of teaching which they were committed a. Form/tupos - type, stamp by a die, mark by a blow, poured/conformed to a mold. b. Teaching/didache – doctrine, teaching, instruction c. Committed/paradidomi- delivered over to – Romans 1:24,26,28, 4:25, 6:17,8:32).

  9. Review of the main points of previous sermons Part One: The Revelation of God’s Righteousness (1:1–8:39) Key Verse – Romans 6:18 “Having been freed from sin, you became slaves to righteousness” Why is Paul speaking humanly – needing to practically encourage/command obedience when believers are positionally justified, slaves to God, and slaves to Righteousness? Weakness of the flesh (spirit is willing, flesh is weak Matt.26:41,Mark 14:38) D.     We are Free – no longer slaves to Sin 1. Slavery to sin results in actual sin 2. Slavery to righteousness results in actual righteousness (positional vs. practical righteousness) 3. Slavery to sin has consequences and once free no desire to return because a. No benefit b. Shame c. Death E.    We are Bound- slaves to God 1. Benefit – sanctification/holiness 2. Outcome – eternal life Conclusion: Romans 6:23 “For the wages of asin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”What did your former master pay? Sin’s Wages – paid you death Free gift of God – God pays/rewards with eternal life.

  10. Review of the main points of previous sermons Part One: The Revelation of God’s Righteousness (1:1–8:39) Does your life reflect that you are a slave of Jesus Christ? (Test yourself with the words/descriptions of this passage/Romans 6 Imagery words that describe true SLAVES of Jesus Christ: 1. baptized/baptizo (Christ) – immersed/dipped into, overwhelmed by, to sink 2. buried/sunthapto (Christ) – to bury with, so what is old decays and is no more 3. crucified/sustauroo (Christ) – made powerless, to fence with stakes 4. died/apothnesko (Sin) – separate, away from, perish 5. slaves/doulos (God) – slaves, under bondage 6. mastery/kurieou (Righteousness) – Lord over, rule 7. reign/basileuo (Grace) – to be King, reign, rule 8. present/paristemi (Lord)- stand before, appear before for approval 9. instruments/hoplon (Righteousness)– tool, weapon, armor 10. under/hupo – (Grace) under, subject to, controlled by 11. obedience/hupakoe (Doctrine)– listen to, attend to 12. committed/paradidomi (Doctrine)- delivered over to, to give alongside 13. form/tupos (Doctrine) - type, stamp by a die, mark by a blow, poured/conformed to a mold. 14. freed/eleutheroo (Sin) – set free, exempt from liability, no longer bound 15. sanctification/hagiasmos (Holiness)– set apart, consecrated, to make holy/sacred 16. wages/opsonion (Eternal Life)– expense, provision, payment 17. eternal life/aionios zoe (Heaven) –forever, continued duration, age-long living

  11. Clarification – What I meant A + B = C 1. Sanctification is not a REQUIREMENT for salvation/eternal life but a RESULT of it (eternal life doesn’t begin at heaven, it begins the moment I’m saved, justified, and born again/regenerated) 2. Sanctification is PROOF of justification which is a requirement for salvation/eternal life. 3. God sanctifies and empowers EVERY believer to be a SLAVE of righteousness - not just some Christians but ALL true Christians - not just POSITIONAL sanctification as far as how God sees me regardless of my sins - but PRACTICAL sanctification (day to day obedience to the Lordship of Jesus Christ) 4. God has declared clearly in Scripture that Justification Sanctification Glorification are an unbroken chain in the life of EVERY true believer 5. It is GOD, not man, one who accomplishes, empowers, and guarantees justification, sanctification, and glorification. - As far as practical obedience in sanctification – God doesn’t do it for us, won’t do it all for us, but neither do we do it all ourselves – we do it together – Him working through us as we submit, obey, and appropriate His power that is always available to us. 6. No OBEDIENCE, no change, no slavery to Christ over a prolonged period of time at a minimum means - church discipline (Matthew 18) - a challenge for the person to test themselves (2 Corinthians 13) - and probably means Jesus is not Lord (2 Timothy 2:19, Matthew 7:22-23, 1 John 2:3-6) 7. If Jesus is not LORD – there is no salvation but instead a strong delusion, the worst delusion – thinking you are saved when you really aren’t. People can be very sincere (Jehovah’s Witnesses), very moral (Mormons), very passionate (Muslims), very caring (Catholics), very spiritual (Buddhists) and very religious like the Pharisees and yet be unsaved.

  12. Clarification – What I did not mean A + B = C I did NOT mean that we add anything (like works/obedience in sanctification) as a requirement for justification or that justification itself does not equal eternal life. Better equations: • Justification = Glorification (Eternal Life) • Justification = Sanctification (Obedience) • Justification leads to Sanctification which leads to Glorification • No sanctification = no justification = no glorification/eternal life • If no Sanctification, no Justification, and no Glorification because • God PROMISES that Justification/Forgiveness WILL produce/result in Sanctification/Obedience and Glorification/Eternal Life. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”

  13. The Biblical Proof Sanctification is NOT Optional • 6:3 “ALL of us” – baptized into his death • 6:4 “So we too” – walk in newness of life • 6:5 “CERTAINLY we shall also” be in the likeness of his resurrection • 6:6 “our old self WAS crucified with him” Crucified Buried Raised (Death to sin) (Body of sin done away with) (New life/no longer slaves)

  14. The Biblical Proof Sanctification is NOT Optional • 6:7 “He who HAS died IS freed from sin” • 6:8 “IF we have died with Christ…we SHALL also live with Him” • 6:11 “SO consider (think/believe) yourselves to be DEAD to sin, but ALIVE to God” • 6:12 “do not let sin REIGN…obeying its lusts” • 6:13 “do not GO ON presenting…as instruments of unrighteousness” • 6:15 “PRESENT yourselves to God…alive, instruments of righteousness” • 6:16 “Sin SHALL not be your master” (same word group as “Lord”) • 6:16 “EITHER (slaves) to sin…or of obedience” A Christian is free from the PENALTY of sin (justification), POWER of sin (sanctification), and someday the PRESENCE of sin (glorification)

  15. The Biblical Proof Sanctification is NOT Optional • 6:17 “OBEDIENT from the HEART” • 6:17 “DELIVERED over to form of doctrine” • 6:18 “FREED from sin…SLAVES to righteousness” • 6:19 “PRESENT…slaves of righteousness” • 6:20 “RESULTING in sanctification (holiness)” • 6:21 “things of which you are now ASHAMED” • 6:22 “FREED from sin, ENSLAVED to God” • 6:22 “RESULTING in sanctification (benefit) and eternal life (outcome)” • 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” PAYOUT of sin – Death VS. REWARD of the free gift – Eternal Life
