The Heart of the Gospel1Timothy 1:3 -11 • He was to guard the Gospel from less than moral and theologically upright teachers. • He was to guard it from false teachers • He was exalting it as the key to understanding the entire revelation of God.
The Gospel is the key that unlocks the entire Bible. • The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is the code that lets us into the entire revelation of God. • The Good News that Christ came as a fulfillment of prophesy and died for our sin and the sin of the whole world, rose to give life and hope to all who believe, is the last piece needed to complete the puzzle of the purpose of God and of humanity. • This Gospel is committed unto us as ambassadors of God and of Christ. • This Gospel is to be guarded by messengers of love who are pure in heart, have a good conscience, and a genuine faith. 1Tim. 1:5
1. The Heart of the Messenger of the Gospel. 1Tim 1:3-7 • Positive - Love, from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a genuine faith. v.5 • Love serves others. • Negative - Taught it to use people, and influence people back to only a partial Gospel. vs. 3, 4, 6,7,19
When there is no love we expect others to serve us instead of serving Christ and others. • II Corinthians 4:5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.
2. The Heart of the Message of the Gospel1Tim 1:3,4,6-8,11 • Cf. 1 Corinthians 15:3,4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. • Positive – Sound Doctrine (Right Teaching) leads to God’s work by faith which is the heart of the Gospel. vs. 3,4,10b,11. • Negative – False Doctrine leads to confusion, egotism, and ignoring our sin. 1:3, 4, 6, 7
The Heart and Life that Needs the • Gospel. 1Tim 1:8 – 11 • Positive – The law leads to the Necessity of Gospel. • 1Tim. 1:8 “We know the law is good if one uses it properly” • Rom. 7:12-14.12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. 13Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.
The law and the Gospel rest on the same moral base and they complement each other. People have always been saved by grace whether living under the law or under the gospel. • Negative – False Teaching leads to Hypocrisy, Controversy, Division, Sin, and generally to a “No Grace Gospel” gospel. • “But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere (genuine) faith.” 1Tim. 1:5 NASB
