Not united by a ruler; rather a government ruled by the people. The ruler must reflect the HERITAGE of the people. • Example: Greeks ruled by Greeks rather than the Ottoman Empire Government
Common language; official language • Example: Those who speak German should unite together to form a nation. Language
Common stories (folktales), songs, national costumes, heroes, religion (shared by all or most of the people) • Example: Grimm's Fairy Tales (Germany), national anthems, folk music Cultural
