SHE Code 29: ‘Management of Ionising Radiation’ Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group
Who should use this presentation & read code Managers of staff, staff, and those responsible for facility users, visitors and contractors on STFC sites, who work with ionising radiation or who enter areas where work with ionising radiation could take place
STFC Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group SHE Code 29 “Management of Ionising Radiation at work”
Key features • Code establishes a framework for work with ionising radiation and underpins: • STFC Safety Code 14 Management of Radioactive Sealed Sources • STFC Safety Code 21 Management of Radioactive Waste • STFC Safety Code 28 Management of Radioactive Open Sources (in draft)
Key features • Code addresses requirements of legislation for example: • Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR99) • Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA93) • Follows non-nuclear sector best practice for restricting exposure to ionising radiations to levels As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)
Key points • Formalises the appointment of: • Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs)Louise Nicholson DL ext. 3554Paul Wright RAL ext. 5480; and • Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) • Sets out: • general arrangements for managing work with ionising radiation – most of which are already in place; and • the need to consult with the RPAon radiation matters
Key points • Also addressed by the code is the: • Establishment of personal dosimetry and health surveillance for radiation workers ; • Designation of radiation areas; • Designation of classified persons; • Establishment of general radiation monitoring; • Production of prior risk assessments; • Production of and adherence to local rules, and • Investigation of radiation incidents and the need for contingency plans
