  1. Circular Motion Lab Stop going in circles

  2. Question • Since speed=distance/time Shouldn’t the fastest line around the track be the shortest one?

  3. What did you experience • What did driver’s feel on the inside arc? • What is true about the tires on the road? Arc = portion of circle Circumference

  4. Frictional Force • Ffrict=μ*Fnorm • Frictional force is the coefficient of friction times the normal force • The coefficient of friction (μ) is determined between two substances empirically. For tires/road it may be high, for tires/ice low. μ is a Greek letter pronounced mew

  5. At The Racetrack • When the kart is turning through a corner of the race track, Centrifugal Force urges the kart to go off the outside of the corner. • In order to keep the kart on the track, the Lateral Traction between the tires and the track must balance the Centrifugal Force. Centrifugal Force Lateral Traction Force

  6. Motorsports-Based Curriculum Modules for Use in Science Classes Prepared for the Manatee School for the Arts by Dr. Pete Hylton At the Racetrack The concept of a “Traction Circle” helps us understand when the kart willlose traction. The Traction Circle represents the limit of traction available from the tires and their friction with the track. Acceleration Traction Traction Limit Lateral Traction - Left Lateral Traction - Right Deceleration Traction

  7. Motorsports-Based Curriculum Modules for Use in Science Classes Prepared for the Manatee School for the Arts by Dr. Pete Hylton At the Racetrack If the vector combination of acceleration traction and lateral traction remain inside the circle, then the kart should remain on the track. Acceleration Traction Lateral Traction - Left Lateral Traction - Right Deceleration Traction

  8. Motorsports-Based Curriculum Modules for Use in Science Classes Prepared for the Manatee School for the Arts by Dr. Pete Hylton At the Racetrack If the vector combination of acceleration traction and lateral traction exceed the circle, then the kart will slide off of the track. Acceleration Traction Lateral Traction - Left Lateral Traction - Right Deceleration Traction

  9. Interpreting Formulas • Acceleration is a=v2/r • Ffrict=m*v2/r • Mass stays constant • We are adjusting the radius if the radius increases what else can increase? • The Velocity.

  10. Interpret the graph
