Memorial Ceremony for Brother Rogelio "Rogie" Velasquez Esmilla The text came from the July 2005 edition of The Ritual and Other Ceremonies of Alpha Phi Omega The following ceremony is intended to assist a Chapter or Alumni Association in paying tribute to a deceased Brother or Sister (including all types of membership as in the Bylaws). This ceremony is to be used at the Chapter or Alumni Association's discretion and may be altered as necessary. The intent is for the ceremony to remain flexible, so it can be personalized to pay sufficient tribute to the deceased. Grieving nonmembers (family, friends, etc.) may be invited and/or involved in the ceremony so as to help them in their healing process. Ritual Preparation: Five candles, one white candle to represent the departed; three blue candles, one for each of the Cardinal Principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service, and one gold candle to represent the spirit of Brotherhood and Sisterhood. Brother/Sister #1 should hold candle #1 (white). Set the remaining four candles on a table with the three blue candles in front of the gold candle. Option: Note the whole ceremony could be done by one Brother or Sister. BROTHER/SISTER #1:On April 21, 1957, the birth of Brother Rogelio "Rogie" Velasquez Esmilla made the world a brighter place. In 1978, Brod Rogie's initiation into Alpha Phi Omega of the Philippines at the Delta Eta Chapter, Jose Rizal University, Mandaluyong City, added his warmth and light to the eternal flame of our great Fraternity and Sorority. Brod Rogie shared with us his Leadership, made us smile with his Friendship, and made the world a better place in which to make a living and a life by giving unselfishly in Service to others. During this time, he has served the Fraternity and Sorority in many capacities, including the following positions in the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) Alumni Association of Northern California: * Public Relations Officer & Sergeant-at-Arms, 1986 * Chairman, Fellowship Committee, 1989 * Public Relations Officer, 1990 * Peninsula Area Coordinator, 1994 He also received awards, most notably in 1986 for Friendship and his work to keep APO-NorCal united.

He might not have been a perfect brother to many of us, but he sure was always there to make us laugh. Rogie was 52 years and one (1) month old; he was born on April 21, 1957. Rogie had diabetes and was undergoing dialysis treatment. Rogie is survived by wife Lirio "Lily" Gonzales Esmilla, 55, and their daughter, Hazel Anne G. Esmilla, 18, as well as Rogie's parents, Ramilo Esmilla, CPA, and Atty. Imelda V. Esmilla of Mandaluyong. Mr. and Mrs. Esmilla, who used to live and work in the USA, went back to the Philippines in 2004. Rogie was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega (Philippines) Alumni Association of Northern California. He was instrumental, together with Brods Gene Licauco and Benny Uy, in revitalizing APO-Nor Cal in 1986. He served as sergeant-at-arms. The unification of APO-NorCal in late 1985 was a legacy left by Rogie. Wife Lily and daughter Hazel were the love of Rogie's life. "My husband was a most loving father to Hazel," said Lily. Rogie's passion included cooking. "Magaling magluto, magaling na cook," said Lily. "Rogie, before getting sick, was in the catering business." Let us send our expressions of sympathy to the Esmilla family.

7. A personal note: Gracie and I are saddened by the passing of our APO brod, friend, and compadre. In October 1986, Rogie was one of the few friends Gracie and I could invite to our church wedding in San Jose. We could not invite many guests owing to our limited budget. Rogie served as photographer at our wedding. His photo above was the only one Rogie was in any of our wedding pictures. Gracie and I were honored to have been asked to be among Hazel's godparents in 1991. When I recall the early years of APO-NorCal, which some 16 of us organized in April 1981, through my presidency of the AA in 1986, what comes to mind is APO’s debt of gratitude to Gene and Rogie and Benny. They worked hard to unify APO-NorCal. If my memory serves me right, Gene received the Leadership award, Rogie Friendship, and Benny Service, and it was one time all three (3) awards had the same weight -- as they should. This is to say Rogie could have received the Leadership or the Service award, and the honor -- APO-NorCal’s honor -- would have carried the same importance. For an APO does not pick and choose. An APO is a leader, friend, and service person all rolled into one. When it meant something -- as it should -- Rogie honored APO. We are honored to have known him, to have engaged in a principled fight with him, to have shared good, not so good, not that bad, and ultimately great times with him. It's an honor to be included among Rogie's friends. Gracie and I share our condolences with Lily and Hazel. May your soul rest in peace, Rogie. Thank you for all you have done.
