  1. Do I need a communication strategy? Talking about your library: digital channels and tools Julia Chandler Libraries Taskforce Thursday 8 February 2018

  2. We’ll cover today: • Strategy and planning • Evaluation • Sustainability • An introduction to some of the most common tools Please ask/type questions as we go along Handout will be shared along with these slides, which contains all the links to sites and materials mentioned

  3. Strategy and planning Strategy: Start with WHY > move on to who, audiences, objectives etc Look at what others have done (for ideas) - but keep it simple

  4. Strategy and planning Plan: What, Who, How and When What do you want to achieve, which audiences do you want to target, how will you reach them (which channels will you use), what do you want people to do? And how will you know if your plan has worked?

  5. Make sure everyone knows Your team are your best ambassadors - people trust what they hear from friends Everyone should be part of ‘selling’ your library

  6. Evaluation Keep it simple - but don’t forget to do it! Remember outcomes are different from outputs (harder to measure, but more impact) Take screenshots, count, record - you’ll value it next time!

  7. Sustainability • Habits - 5 mins once a day checking for activity [or a programme of weekly/monthly updates] • Build skills across team - encourage all to develop their own voice. PRACTICE!

  8. Serendipity: happy accident Don’t underestimate the power of people + random to make something totally unplanned lift your comms beyond expectations.
