OCR examining board Four Units How are pupils assessed? Controlled assessment -60% • Integrated task • Practical portfolio Exam work • Creative task (45 minutes) – 15% • Listening paper – 25%
What does controlled assessment mean in Music? • Medium control • Limited to 10 hours per composition • 4 hours per log/evaluation • Under ‘exam’ conditions • Bring own headphones to every lesson • Cannot take composition work out of lessons
What does controlled assessment mean in Music? cont. • But can develop ideas at home, but cannot bring anything written down into lesson • Any specific help that is given by teacher must be logged • For performances, must be recorded in the presence of teacher ( i.e. Mr Walton or myself)
Integrated Task (Unit ONE B351) • A performance (15%) • recorded • A commentary (5%) • Including the brief • Written using MS word • No more than 400 words • A composition (10%) • Recorded • Any style or genre • To show technical control, expression, interpretation • Show understanding of typical features of the instrument • Recorded as a Solo accompanied either live or by a cd 30% of the GCSE (Controlled Assessment) • Context of the piece and the role of their instrument in it • Instrumental Techniques used • Quality of performance • A brief for a composition based on the techniques above • For your instrument • Can be a solo or as part of a group in which your instrument is the most prominent part

When will controlled assessments take place? • Composition in a dance style, composition log and evaluation – first half term of Spring Term 2012 • Composition for own instrument – first half term of Winter Term 2012 • Performance 1 (solo) and commentary – June 2012 • Performance 2 (group) – November 2012
What can parents do to help to prepare for controlled assessments? • Encourage children to do regular practice • Ask them what they are performing and discuss with them what in particular they are practicing to improve etc • Encourage small scale composition and improvisation at home as part of regular practice time (also important for Creative Task exam) • Ask them to perform to you at home
AoS 1 AoS 2 = Shared Music AoS 4 = Descriptive Music AoS 3 = Dance Music • AoS 1 covers the work found in Unit 1 (The Integrated Task) • AoS 1 = Unit 1 and the creative task • Ensembles • Orchestral • Choral • Jazz band • Paired dance • Waltz • Latin – tango/salsa • Group • Line dancing/ bhangra • Improvised • Disco/ club dance • Programme Music (Classical music that tells a story) • Film Music
What can parents do to help? • For Listening exam (June 2013) • Encourage children to listen to as much different music as possible • Have stations such as Classic FM;Radio 3 on in the car/at home etc/via internet/digital radio or through live streaming sites • Short and regular exposure to different types of music works best • Ask children to comment on what they hear; encourage them to discuss music with you
What can parents do to help? cont. • Make cards with keywords on for each topic • Play games with the cards e.g how many words on Tango can you name in a minute? • Take any opportunities at home, and when on holiday, that may arise to see live music in action
On a weekly basis • Pupils set homework once a week, in addition to regular practice on instrument • Specific listening homeworks, use Youtube/ live streaming sites etc • End of topic tests • Half termly performances and assessment • Mini composition exercises • Attending extra-curricular activities
