  1. The character I chose from the book Odyssey is Athena. She is the daughter of Zeus and Metis. Legend says that Zeus swallowed his pregnant wife Metis to prevent Athena’s birth because he thought she was going to have a son that would take his spot in the throne.

  2. Zeus then complained about how he had such a painful headache, not long after that Hephaestus split his forehead open with an axe and Athena was born out of his head; she came out fully grown and dressed wearing clothes and even a full set of armour.

  3. Athena plays a great role in this book, she has many talents like appearing as another person in a disguise as a way of testing mortals to see if they treat her well when she is disguised as one of them, she also likes to disguise herself as another person to keep a low profile or act as a mentor or an advisor, she did this for Telemachus while Odysseus was absent.

  4. She also had a talent of changing the appearance of humans like the time she changed Odysseus into an old beggar when he returned to Ithaca, he needed to be in a disguise to be able to gather information without showing who he really was.

  5. Athena is the goddess of battles and protector of armies; she is regarded as the goddess of strategies and the sensible aspect of war. She would only help people fight if they had a right purpose in mind, but she would much rather think of a wise solution to end the problem without violence.

  6. Athena has many symbols, the first one is an owl, this symbolises her wisdom and strategy thinking. The second symbol is her shield, this tool represents her as a fighter and a defender, and it is also a symbol of power because it has the ability to turn people into stone but she would only use this towards her most hated enemies.

  7. The third symbol is the olive tree; this is a symbol of Athena because she was supposed have a battle with Poseidon over who will be the ruler of the city Athens. So Zeus decided to make a challenge to settle the argument which was whoever could give the people a better gift would rule the city.

  8. Poseidon gave them water, but it was too salty for the people to drink, so Athena’s gift of the olive tree which supplied the people with oil, wood and food had won the challenge.

  9. At the very start of the book Athena begs her father Zeus if she could help Odysseus back home so he could see all his family again; she is so worried and concerned about him because he has been trapped on the islands of Ogygia for a very long time, she was able to convince her father that she could help him.

  10. As the goddess of wisdom Athena liked Odysseus because he was a very clever man, they had a very strong relationship because Athena would always be looking out for him whenever he was in danger and would always help to defend him and be there for support, she would assist and guide him through hard times.

  11. Odysseus and Athena had many things in common, they were both leaders, and would take action in any situation. Athena helps him in many ways, disguising him or even disguising herself to find out answers, she also kept Telemachus under her protection because she knew how much he meant to him, he would never want his son to be harmed. Athena liked to boost Odysseus’ confidence by giving him positive comments; they would always put their thoughts together to create great ideas.

  12. Athena brought peace to the men of Ithaca by saying “You men of Ithaca, break off the slaughter now, let there be peace between you.” That’s when everyone stopped and shook each other’s hands knowing that they will now live in peace forever.
