College Physics I • I am Professor Yost. • Office: Grimsley 246 upstairs near your labs. • Hours: Mon. 2 – 5 PM, Tu, Th. 9:15 – 11 AM or by arrangement (not Friday, generally) • Textbook: Douglas Giancoli, Physics, 6th Ed. • (Chapters 1 – 12) • The new textbooks in the Citadel book store are packaged with a MasteringPhysics access packet. You also need an i>clicker.
Introduction • I am a theoretical particle physics – I derive predictions for observations at particle physics experiments, primarily at the Large Hadron Collider.
Today’s Topics & Announcements • The Syllabus • Mastering Physics • i>clickers • Your laboratories do not meet this week. • If you are in lab section 1 – 10, they begin next week. • For sections 11 – 19, they begin the week after next.
Tuesday’s Assignment • Do the first problem set in MasteringPhysics, HW0: Introduction to MasteringPhysics • Read Chapter 1, except sec. 1-7. We will discuss it Tuesday. Expect a quiz. • It is important to read in parallel with the course. • The essential topics in chapter 1 are: • Significant figures • Scientific notation • Units
Grading Class participation includes quizzes and responses via your i-clicker. The main purpose of quizzes is to encourage you to read the chapter before coming to class. You don’t have to understand everything on a first pass, but should be prepared to participate intelligently in class.
Typical Exam Grading Scale I don’t use a “curve”, and believe in transparent, easy-to-understand grading. There is no quota for various grades. If you are accustomed to curved grades, the exam scale may look very relaxed, but I believe it realistically reflects the difficulty of a typical physics exam. Approximate Grading Scale
Course Content This course is an introduction to Newtonian mechanics and its applications.
Exams There will be an exam every three chapters. You can use any calculator on the exams, but may not use advanced features, including integrate, solve, and graph. You should not need these anyway. An equation sheet will be provided for the hour exams, and you can bring your own page to the final. The final exam is at the usual time, in this room.

Homework and the Honor System • Any answers submitted must be your own. Allowing someone else to do your homework is cheating. • You may discuss the problems with other cadets, but do not allow them to do all the work for you. • Using worked solutions from the solution manual or on-line sources is cheating. If you need help, see me or a tutor. • Cheating will reduceyour grade in the course even if it is not discovered, because you will not learn to solve the problems yourself and will do poorly on the exams.
i>clicker2 • In this class, you will be required to use an i>clicker2 remote, available in the Citadel bookstore. • You will be expected to bring the remote to class every day. • Points will be assigned for clicker participate • See Class Participation in the syllabus. • Attendance will be taken using i>clicker2 • Using another person’s remote in class, or allowing it to be used by another person, is cheating and will be reported as an honor violation.
